Why should I buy the D60?

I have been asking this question on other sites. I want to know why you feel that the D60 is the camera I should buy over the S2, D100 or the SD9. I have a E10 now and it is really fine camera but I'm looking to move into a more challanging system. I shoot landscapes some, some portraits, but enjoy shooting sports most. I know about the 1D but won't pay $4000 for one. The refurbs are very hard to find. So, tell why the D60 is the camera I should go for. Thanks

And because I own a D60 this MUST mean its the greatest camera of the bunch :)

the D100 is a good camera as is the D60, but to be honest, i jumped from the D100 waiting lists to the D60 because of the pictures i was seeing from the D60. less noise, and sharper images.......plus, i believe the D60 is the King of long exposures without noise.

there are plenty of other reasons that you are sure to recieve, but most folks that already have Canon glass (better selection here) are all set, and the choice is obvious.

hopefully you make the choice that is right for you, but do your homework. once you buy into a system (lens and accs.) for one brand, it gets even more expensive to switch........but then you know that.
good luck on your decision.......;-))

If sports is your major interest I would seriously consider Canon for its lens line-up and IS technology. From everything I have read the 3 cameras are more alike than different so think about who's lenses work best for you.

I bet that's not the advice you were looking for, or expecting! But maybe it's good advice after all? I've had my D60 since July; it's my first SLR, and I upgraded from an Olympus C-2100 UZ. I spent $2K on the camera body, and a little more than that on three lenses, CF cards, a cable release, and a spare battery. I wouldn't spend $4,500 or so without a compelling reason. I knew I wanted a digital SLR, and that the D60 was the best one for me. That doesn't seem to be the case for you.

On the other hand, I take it you're not satisfied with your E-10, and want to move up to a DSLR in this range. If that's the case, you should seriously consider the D60, for the very simple reason that it's the best of what you're looking at. The other replies you get will surely tell you why.

Good luck and have fun!

I agree w/ Forrest. Actually, if you have to seek advice from people who do not know you, for something that should be your decision... I guess the more honest advice is to give you any.

Simple way to avoid this: buy a D60.

As far as i know, long exposures apart, the only real differences between the D100 and the D60 are the control layout (gotta like one or the other) and selection of lenses.

One of my colleagues here in Paris, shooting in clubs, gets almost the same pics with a D100 than i get with a D60. Yet he phoned me the other day to ask me about my flash settings for this pic

I basically answered "uh, i don't know, it's ETTL flash my friend... I trigger and hope for the best!" and when the best appears on the LCD... you know what i mean.

Then there are the "give me a hammer to smash this ca..." shots, like this one

but then the day after you have the "print it big!! please!!" shot, like this one

Much more victories than failures, but still some failures here and there.

Maybe you could pick up a 1D. It's better for sports.
He did say that he does not want to spend $4000 for it...

Get your D60 now and your lens will still be good when you upgrade
to an 1D.

You come to a forum that clearly says "Canon SLR Talk" and you expect someone to tell you to buy a brand other than Canon?, those on here are kind enought to give you honest opinions and I suspect none really care what you buy, don't expect anyone to cajole you into buying anything, for that visit your nearest dealer.

If it is primarily sports you are looking to shoot, the Canon system surely has the advantage with it's IS system lenses. If you look at the professional enclosure at any sporting event you will see that the vast majority of the guys have got the white Canon L lenses.

Unfortunately, as you are probably aware, a really suitable camera for for you is something like the D1H, which costs a great deal of money, as does L glass.

No doubt by pre-focussing atc you will be able to get good results while you are building up towards a better system.
Even one really good telephoto L lens would help you a lot.

So I would suggest that at the present time Canon is really quite along way ahead for this type of use, and, if you don't already own any glass, I would have thought it relatively difficult to justify any other choice.

BTW Unfortunately I don't own any of the cameras in question, so I have no ax to grind, if I do mange to get one I am leaning towards an S2, but then it's main use would be portrait and landscape, so it's different strokes.
Best regards,

Leo, I would agree with you if I hadn't already been to the Sig site. Over there I couldn't believe how so many tried to talk me out of buying a SD9. I was greatfull for their honesty. I would hope that if you were dissatisfied with your D60 you would tell me. If you love it, I want to know that to.

...if you're really into sports, sooner or later you'll wind up with a 1D or its successor. So you'll want to start investing in glass that you can use with it, like the 70-200 and 100-400 IS lenses. In the meantime, you can do just fine with the D60.

Ernie:

My advice for you would be to look at the lenses first. Others have mentioned this, but maybe not emphasized it enough. When you get into a DSLR system with interchangeable lenses, what you are really doing is investing in a "system" of lenses. The cameras will come and go, but what you really want to do is be happy with the lenses because, for the most part, that's where your money is really going over the long haul. It doesn't cost nearly as much to change cameras as it does to change lenses.

On this forum, for the most part, you will find people who are convinced the Canon lenses lead the way now. After you do your own research, you may have a different opinion.

Good luck on your quest for "your" answer.

--Now i'm going to sound like I'm bragging but I have to say where i'm coming from. In earlier years I did Commercial Photiography for 30 years, mostly MF and LF. About 4 years ago I did an evaluation of a 2 MP camera for an advertising company and was astounded with the results I obtained. I have also been with computers for almost 20 years now and with Photoshop since version 3.5 so I went digital. I currently own the Nikon CP 5000 and the 4500, good cameras with superb lenses but I wanted an SLR and when I heard of the D60 I ordered it with two lenses, the 28/135 and the 75/ 300, both IS and AF. Again I am extremely pleased not only the digital aspect but the quality of the images from both the Nikons and the D60. These cameras will easily produce 13" x 19" prints, the largest my printer will print, and despite the countless hours I have spent in darkrooms nothing I have done with film cameras can equal the work I am producing now particularly with the D60. I can produce more quality work in a day with the D60/Computer combination than I could in weeks in the conventional darkroom and now have many more options. Do I like the D60? Yes, especially with the IS lenses, it is the finest 35 mm type camera I have ever had my hands on
......Leo......

The D60 has a 1:1.6 multiplier on the lens focal length cause the sensor is smaller than a 35mm film would be. Make sure that your lenses (or the lenses your looking to get) will be wide enough to get the shots you like for landscapes etc... I think (from memory) the D60 is among the most 'telephoto' of the DSLRs with the 1Ds being being the least (1:1)... (Theres a comparative review somewhere on the site showing all the multipliers)

The D60 takes fantastic shots, the lens is going to be as important consideration as the camera though - Canon L glass is widely recognised as pretty superior but its damned expensive... (OK so everyone has their opinion). I'm not rich enough for L glass, but I have a couple of nice lenses that suit my purpose. The 100mm/f2.8 Macro USM takes fantastic shots (even I as a relative novice can appreciate the quality)

I've only had my D60 for a month or so, and I'm no pro - so my opinion is fairly biased to the camera I bought - I paid for the D60 with someone else's money (its a work camera) not out of my own pocket - If I ever changed job, I'd happily go and buy one and pay for it personally with my own extremerly hard earned (and very rare) cash. I dont know wether you'll get a better endorsement than that - its just a damn fine piece of kit.
