Dpreview test samples

Just noticed as well, and they look amazing, and in raw, and jpeg for that matter, the D800 is doing quite well vs. the 645D.

Great job, Nikon. Tick, tock goes the clock. Everything a UPS truck goes by now, I'm thinking, could it? Is it my camera? No. It's only March 19th. :-(

Big time bravo on the samples.

Long time Canon shooter here and currently shooting with a Mark IV...very impressive results. You all must be very happy!! Nikon has a winner in this body I think.
Cheers,

I might be crazy but at base the little Nex-7 seems to be as good. The D400 might be sweet!!!

Good news then dpreview is actively preparing a review. At least they've had the camera for a little while.

Can't be too long before the review is out!

Good catch and thank you for posting.

Now that I have had time to look at the images they look very good. Very smooth tones at 100 and 200iso. Decent high ISO 800/1600/3200, I will have no problems using when needed.

yes you are crazy (but thats ok as the nex-7 looks like a fun camera (with only 2 lens :P)), not only is there more detail in the D800 (just because of the larger sensor) but look at the bottom right gradation of the green magnet (with the paper clips)

has no one noticed the D800 samples yet? :) randomly got on and there they were!

You scored on this one!!!
  • First dpr samples spotted!
It was also good to find posted:
  • First sensor tests of D800 & D4
  • First availability of D800/D800E manual
  • First D800 RAW images posted (the chandelier and plant in front of a window)
  • First real-life D800 RAW images (the beautiful, melancholy Polish young lady & series)
  • First large-ish discount (Amazon) and price dropping info (Canada)
  • First box opening video (albeit the D4 ;-))
And a bit further back:

First spotting of the Nikon Press Release posted by accident - then pulled down - hours prior to announcement date.

All in all, I know I can come here to find the stuff/news/info early on; and I'm really looking forward to reading the post that says...

First D800 received!!!

Thanks for finding these samples.
Cheers!

Edit: I know this is a slight deviation from the content of this thread, but wanted to say thanks for posting the link to these samples :-)

They look great!

Despite the 645D which is a good landmark (but not the ultimate) for quality in MF being a bit bigger, the D800 looks amazing.

If you look at the ISO samples and put the D800 with JPEG side by side with the D800 with RAW you'll notice a huge increase of quality from the RAWs, more than I've seen before in most cameras.

Yeah I was checking that out too. The DOF is thinner on the D800. May be part of the illusion.
I discounted areas that were obviously out of focus. I tend to put the pressure on by looking at the brown thread in the shadow. Not bad between those two but the Pentax kills them both

Yes good point, I think I'm going to get the Pentax instead, but it will mean one less round of golf per week to compensate for a while.

then the D800E will be pretty scarey!

then again, the AA filter on the 800 looks pretty weak anyway.

The DPR test shots are consistent with images posted on other websites. The D800 produces an unbelievable level of detail and takes advantage of the high pixel count of its sensor.

Great DR at base ISO, with improvements in shadow detail, compared to older Nikon FX models.

Noise at ISO 1600-6400 expected and should clean up well in PP.

Strong work, Nikon!

Considering even my nex-5 has a 14-24,24-70,85 1.4 ....I think the Nex7 has them too :)-

However, we don't seem to be looking at the same image unless you only care about shadow detail. There is more to a camera performance than that. Look at detail, not just shadows and reevaluate.

The JPEGs also look much better than I remembered from the Imaging Resource samples. I always go straight to RAW, but I went back to see the JPEG vs the others and they look great vs 5D Mk II, A900 through ISO 100-6400 and above. Nice job Nikon. I hardly ever shoot JPEG, but it's nice to know I could if I wanted to.

I could find a few spots where D700 looked slightly better, and some where the D800 looked a little better, but mostly pretty close. And considering the resolution..

not as good as the D4. Very impressive. Can we finally bury the more megapixels = more noise myth? I think my D700 will end up gathering mothballs.

Pentax should be very worried.
