Still busy editing after almost 3 weeks with 2 full tours in Awesome Costa Rica., special thanks to all of my guests, we sure had a good time, great weather, and fun shooting.

Lots of different equipment here with everyone comparing notes and settings., it is nice to learn more from my new friends. We traveled to some new locations on the second tour, and found lots of cool subjects on these newest adventures.

A requested private tour will start on April 7th, 2012, so I need to get caught up with my editing before I go on this one., also, 4 local workshops next weekend to keep my hard drives filled. Lots to do, the the India tour coming soon in late April, just booked my flights for April 25th - May 14th, 2012... 15 hours+ to get to Delhi! I need an iPad badly!

I hope everyone is getting some nice shooting in during this early spring, pretty amazing weather eh!!

Higher iso's then I am used to, but the results are ok, imo. I will add some new images later to this thread, in case you are interested to see more.

Most images taken with a tripod, and gimbal head and no flash used, as I prefer natural light for all my shooting.

The croc shot was a slight crop, kind of a mess, but thought it was at least interesting., we were about 6 feet from this huge animal, while in a river boat... that one was hand help.

Take care, and more soon!

Really great pictures! I love the hummingbirds in flight, I've tried a few times to get a hummingbird like that but my camera never focuses fast enough. Great pictures!

Hey Ray!

Congrats on another successful trip Ray. I think the Tanager is my pic.

Some aren't quite as sharp as one would expect from your usual captures, but the slow shutter speed and aperture explain it. Some low light your dealing with there. Are you close enough for a FX? If so many good deals to be had for a used D700 or D3 and the D3s is dropping fast.

peace,

Ray

I am happy with my D300, for now., and yes, I wish some were a bit more sharp, but sharp isn't everything to me., enjoying the beauty of nature, and the challenges of the capture seem to be more important.

For FX, I would get a D4, and a 600mm, but that won't happen anytime soon!, unless I sell the house!

Then I would need someone to lug that glass around the world for me, along with my 2-400!!

take care bud.

You don't need anymore lens or do you? You also don't need the latest dslr, but a stop or two would be nice when your shooting at 1/80. :)

If I were a paying customer I wouldn't be happy with blurry pics on a trip like this and would feel less than satisfied. If I new I was going to be repeating this trip without worry of the cost, then sure I would be happy. For some people its a once in a lifetime chance.

-- I am happy with my shots, and no, I do not need any more lenses. Everyone comes home with blurry pics, that is part of photography, especially birds., we just do the best we can, and try to enjoy ourselves.

If I were you I wouldn't want to give up the portability and flexibility of your current rig. I do think the limitations of the equipment are more visible than they were four years ago. Maybe Nikon will help us out with a D400 soon.

-- I am sure I would have better images if I brought a 200mm f2, a 300mm f2.8, a 400mm f2.8, a 500mm f4, and a 600mm f4 on my tours., along with 5 D400 cameras,
to the tune of about 50k, but my kit will do for now as you said.

(plus the cost of a wheel barrow to haul them in!)

I guess I will need to learn how to live with less then perfect images., and I am fine with that... I delete at least 60% anyhow!

What amazes me is how so many photographers are so obsessed with the concept of "sharp", and they can't think past that., unfortunate in a way.

I have a great story to tell you if you want to meet for coffee.

thanks Jim.
