5D3 or 1DX for Big Glass?

it's for fast frame rate and more accurate AF using fast lenses.
f/8 is more needed by amateurs.
1D4 may be partly designed for amateurs because it's released between Olympics.
What absolute nonsense!

This remains one of my "issues" with Canon.. the spot meter linked to Af point reserved only for the 1 series. Nikon's $1000 bodies have this feature enabled and I really miss it with my 7D since I shoot often with spot meter.

I can understand Canon protecting the 1 series investment.. if I buy a DX will appreciate that BUT that said reserving spot meter linked to Af point is somewhat ridiculous.

Sorry for the rant.. now that the 5D3 does not have spot meter linked it also probably means 7D2 won't either. I'll probably take the 5D3 off my list because of that.. a $3500 camera body should have that feature.. heck a $1700 body should too!
Go with the 1DX. It will do everything the 5DIII will do plus some things you will find useful but would never know about if you got the 5DIII.

For example:

With the 1DX you can have spot exposure linked to the active focus point. Really helps with birds flying somethimes with trees behind them and sometimes sky.

With the 1DX you should (unless Canon cripples two functions that are on the 1DIV) be able to use Av mode, and set your aperture, ISO, and set a minimum shutter speed (that is not limited a fastest minimum speed of 1/250 like the 5D III) such as 1/1000 and then also set safety shift to automatically raise the ISO if necessary. Again, really helps with birds that go from sunlight to shade when you need a fast shutter to stop motion.

Please forgive the typos! A great speller I am, a great typist I am not!

... Football is there a big difference realistically between 6fps and 14fps in the real world?
12 fps against 10 fps of 1D4 or D4 is already a big difference,
which turns directly into hit rates:
if 12 fps gives you a batting average of 0.30, then 10 fps will do 0.25.
values of the two players should be very different
...
assuming the AF performances are about the same at highest frame rates,
that we won't know before lengthy tests.

will the 5d3 move the spot meter with the focus point?...
for one POSSIBLE diff from your description...

this whole conversation is interesting to me.. I too am 'torn'

what do I get for the bigger-body that I have to carry...
forget price for this conversation..
what is given in features?

is there a 'matrix' somewhere that compares EVERY issue for these discussions?

column 'A'....column 'B'...
all features ...and a summary..
that is what I am looking for to decide...

I plan to get down to one camera.... w/3-4 lenses 2 zoom 2 primes maybe 3 primes
(ok ok ..... 11 primes)

but 5d3 looks good... is 1DX REALLY better? in general ...feature wise....which points....uh....the matrix I want...where is it..

thanks for so many really thoughtful comments back to the OP..
this is useful..

what about that spot meter and the moving point?

Tom

P.S. I missed the order startup ..for the 5D3............I am like 40+ on that list
but TOP on 1Dx...so I am biased there... for 1Dx
love the 1dx body...

I need advice also.. and wait for the OP ...what did he do?
tough decision IMO

problem is...... 1Dx = 2 x 5D3 in price

I know NOTHING about sports...
.....but ..........
isn't this where I .....TRY TO....TRADE a 5D2 AND a 1D3 for a 1Dx? ....
moderate performers .... for the top pro?
ZI did watch that Brad Pitt movie ...
and now like the sports ideas a bit more... I am learning...

I likely will grit my teeth and wait a month for the 1Dx...unless I see a matrix that makes them VERY close...

1Dx will have 1 MORE STOP NOISE PERFORMANCE - IMO
that is EVERYTHING to me... with that expanded control...I THINK I WILL GET

or maybe it will be a bad dream...

been THERE.... (cough.... 1d3...cough)

this forum has taught me a lot and people have great ideas and questions...
thanks for that

this is a good detailed point and IS THE WAY I am sure...
but sometimes I want the other settings... when not BIF....

traveling spot meter can be troublesome.. usually..
but is GREAT sometimes in NON - BIF shots...
I am a beginner there....with BIF

So having a 1D Mk IV, which camera would add to it, the 5D III or the 1Dx? How did you like the IQ compared to the 5D II?
Sorry I'm late with my reply... I've been out shooting. :-)

Having already added a second MkIV which is the logical path, I would (and am) adding a 1D-X.

Quite frankly, I fond the IQ of my MkIV's equal to or better than my 5DII. I really think people make too much fuss about the heralds of full frame, especially when it sits inside a consumer body.

Thank you for all of your responses. Much appreciated.

I cancelled my pre-order today on my 5DIII and am going to pre-order my 1DX tomorrow. Now just to decide to get it in the US for $200 cheaper or get here in Canada. See what my local shop says tomorrow.

Cheers!
John

Rhats ok, at least you keeping out of trouble! :)

I to own a 1D Mk IV and am trying to decided which. To me the 5D III looks like a toy and seem not to be worth the $3500.00. Some how I can justify spending $6800.00 for the 1Dx especially having owned 1D bodies before. I think the IQ this time between the 5D III and the 1Dx will be more apparent this time. I don't think they made the same mistake they did with the 5D II and the 1Ds MkIII by making them with both the same sensor with the same IQ. I just wish the 1Dx had F8 focus point. But then agian manual focus is not that difficult as long as your subjest is not moving that fast. ;)
