OM-D. Silver or Black? OMG, this is so difficult!

I also preferred the silver with the 14-42 II lens, but apparently it's not an option. :(

You can imagine what would have happened if this was coming from Pentax :-) I'm sure there would be a camouflage version coming out pretty quickly.... or maybe Hello Kitty!

I know what you mean ;)

They like making "special editions" or titanium, or gold versions of cameras, even for not so special cameras like K-7, K-r, and now the Q.

It is a tough call for me too. I have a rare all black OM-1n, several lens, etc. All black. Black was considered the rarest choice, if you could find one back in the day (had Om's since the early 80's and still perfectly functional, the all black one was a trade several years ago, pristine condition, lucky find). So me too, it's tough call. I think the silver harkens back to the standard, but black was, back when, the rarity, and far less produced. Try to find an all black OM-1n, and you'll see what I mean. What that means today, I have no idea, except greater value for a black one.

Lately I'm thinking he was talking about pixel peepers.

But I decided on the silver one.
Silver lenses are a big reason, also I like the leatherette much better..

I just checked you out, you're really quite a prick. No worries, I won't waist my time to respond to you again.

Frankly, you should be banned as I see it.

No Idea. Ordered the silver, but maybe now thinking black. Just for the grip match.
This is the only remaining question for me. Black or silver E-M5?

1. The silver version looks great and distinctly retro. The "leather" covering the body looks fantastic and with it, this camera looks closest to an OM-? SLR. BUT, so many Olympus silver lenses have a different silver colour. While they look OK, the 2 tones of silver do not look really good, and they definitely ruin the retro look.

2. The black version would look good with black lenses, although not as distinctly retro as many new cameras are black. It would attract less attention for street shooting and there is less chance of reflection from the silver part affecting lighting of subjects that are close. All fine, BUT, the pattern on the body covering looks odd with its diagonally stripes, which is not something that was used in an OM-? SLR, looking too modern, out of character and even cheap.

3. I suppose I can get black lenses for a silver E-M5 and it should still look reasonably good. What do you think?

I really wish Olympus would use the same "leather" on the black version. Not a big deal, actually. I will be happy if Olympus can just deliver on the specs provided in this camera. There is however something it can do to make it perfect. Olympus should give us a better shaped or more effective built-in grip, so we can avoid the bulk and weight of the optional grip. The optional grip with its duplicated shutter release button seems so redundant, and a waste of space (mostly hollow inside that grip). A slightly thicker grip built into the body is so simple and can provide some space inside for a bigger battery and/or a second memory card slot, and probably a better positioned front dial.

How about it, Olympus?

Polish joke, but we have had enough tensions in these threads. Seriously, where did you see this Polish review?

Black is the better colour, it is more discreet.

However, black is common now, and plastic cameras are mostly black. It's also easy to cover an alloy body with black, but its very difficult to do the reverse (ie black to silver).

So ... I like the idea of the camera shouting "metal"! Most smaller DSLR cameras are plastic, aren't they! And they are normally black. And el cheap Nikon 3100, or a Canon, DSLR, they are plastic, and black!

And -- a quality question - is the black colour applied via an anodised electrical process, or is it a horrible, scratchable paint?? Like the Pen black is applied?

To confuse things, the Fujifilm X-100 limited edition, is black ... !!!! And they say it looks very "cool"!

I'm sorry but I didn't save the link and I have a bad memory. Someone in this forum linked it. Read it today.

I preordered the silver.

Looks a lot better with the 45 and 75mm, and matches the black very well too. Plus the silver won't peel off.

I like the leather texture better as well.

Like silver too

I'm pretty sure that was all just psychological. But I do like the look of the leatherette better than the geometric pattern on the black body.
