Hi all,

Just finished taking some photos of the new years eve fireworks in Sydney, Australia. This was my first attempt in taking fireworks shot so I was just basically experimenting with some settings. Although I was fairly content in the outcome of the firework image, I was wondering if there is anyway I could brighten up the backgrund such as the harbour bridge etc. Any suggestions will be welcomed.

thanks.

Great shot! Do you have the exif data or the settings you used?

Great Picture. When I first got my G2 back in July 02 I attempted to take some firework shots that were not even close to the quality you achieved. My question is did you use a tripod?

I like the picture as it is but if you wanted to brighten the harbour bridge you could possible use a higher iso speed however that would brighten everything up I imagine and may cause some noise in the background.
Unfortunately everything's a tradeoff.

I agree with AnthonyX. I like the picture as it is, also. Dave

Ivan.

absolutely one of the best fireworks shots I've ever seen. Congrats on capturing a truly great photo.
I think the bridge is lit just right.

Hi Ivan

Great shot. If you want a brighter bridge, jump into whatever image pgm you use and go to work. The detail is there. A few seconds on curves brings it up - but you need to work on the other aspects of the photo if they become too light for your taste. Have a go. The detail is there.

I wouldn't try to brighten anything, it's just perfect like that. Nice job!

Use ISO 50, a tripod and a little longer aperture speed for a brighter bridge. You had it on 5sec, try a little longer up to 15 secs. Set the manual focus on infinity too. You may like what you did better though with 5 secs.

Nice Shot, must be hard getting a tripod in the crowd.

What about this idea... try taking a half exposed shot of the bridge and buildings when the fireworks are not going, then take another exact same shot on the same frame with the fireworks. That way, your bridge should be brighter but your fireworks should have the same exposure.

You obviously need a tripod and good timing.

thank you all for your comments and suggestions, I actually tried to take some shots in 2001/2002 but lacked any clue and the results was shocking.

It wasn't until I saw some of the work and other people's experiences that was posted in this forum that I realize the potential of the G2 (i guess a poor workman always blames his tools)

so thanks again for all the tips and i hope to share some knowledge back when I get more experienced.

It's difficult experimenting with fireworks isn't it :-)

They're all over too quickly, and I like to watch them and go "Oooh" and "Aahh" with my friends as well!

My fireworks attempts (with a Canon S20, no tripod and no manual aperture etc settings):

Looking forward to summer (fireworks every Saturday night for 2 months) to try out the G3 and play with some manual settings
