Is it possibility to retract the flash on the canon s100 manually (just push it by hand) or does this harm it?

Is there another simple way to retract the flash without truning the camera off and on?

Am I correct in assuming that you have the flash set to ON, as opposed to Auto? You can switch the flash off by pressing the arrow icon on the back of the camera.

Personally, I'd never force it down by hand.

I'm with Gail. I wouldn't manually push it down. As noted go into the flash menu and set it to auto where you can more or less know when it will pop up depending on shooting conditions OR keep it shut off until needed. I keep mine off on my S95.

Good luck.

You can press it down by hand, but I'm not sure if it's good for the camera to do it that way.

The other (obvious?) way to do it is to press right on the rear control dial, which brings up the flash menu, and turn it off.

What I do is save P mode with Flash On to the C mode on the dial (Menu-> Save Settings). Then when I want to turn the flash on, I switch to C, when I want to take a pic with it off I switch to P...it's faster than going through the flash menu.

Quality camera aside that is a deal breaker for me. If I am wrong so be it. It seems that if you want or need fill flash on the fly you have to set the flash on. Doing that raises the flash. The manual switch to pop the flash is a better way or the old way to do it. Sometimes all the bells and whistles are not that great. It my subjective use, but IMO not efficient.

Pushing it down by hand is going to break it, maybe not today, but eventually - definitely not recommended.

It is a simple matter to turn off the flash by using the four-way rocker dial on the back.

On the S95, the camera will remember where you last set the flash (ON/AUTO/OFF) in all modes except one or two of the SCN modes.

I agree. The camera is small, though, so I don't know if there is room for another button. I'd take a flash button over the GPS.

Saying this, I rarely ever need to enable the flash with the S100. I keep it set to off.

The flash on s100 can be a pain until you get used to it but, for me, it is not at all a deal breaker.
