SD1 DPReview's review

Just read the Imaging Resource and Luminous Landscape reviews. At the Imaging Resource you can use their 'Comparometer' tool to compare the SD1 images against images from any other camera.

What are the processing settings on the comparometer?

Most of the reviews I have seen use the defaults, which are awful...

When is it coming? Sigma deserves this review soon.
With all respect to Andy Westlake & company and their proclamations to the contrary, I'm getting real skeptical that it will be coming this year.

There is a real problem with the prioritizing reviews purely based on "interest" / "demand". Sometimes the existence of something is required for there to be expressed interest. Especially with something like the SD1 and other Sigma cameras. If I remember correctly, there were some weeks that the SD1 was ranked at the top of the DPR click rankings. Sounds like interest. Unfortunately, they did not have a production SD1 they could use. Also, the price debacle didn't help. Once they did have a usable SD1, there was always some other camera that needed a review. I'm betting there would be a lot of "non-Sigma" users reading the review if it ever gets published.

If we have to wait until there are no other cameras to review, the SD1 review will never be completed.

The delay is blatantly unfair to Sigma. If the review is published, there will be more interest. Not publishing the review suppresses interest.

Yes, but equally awful means a level playing field. ;) The IR review starts out by saying that with the price reduction they can recommend it to a wide variety of photographers. Not a bad paragraph to start out with.

They need to have two types of reviews. Edmunds.com does a 'basic' review of most cars and makes a judgement. They then have 'extended 'reviews where they keep the car for over a year. The Nex7 review is like thirty pages long! I didn't even bother to read it.

I can tell you why there is no color temp slider. If you move the slider the entire file would have to be reprocessed each time. The math used to render the image is dependent on the while balance setting. Years ago one of the forum regulars reported that one of the Foveon engineers told him this was so. The short cut is that you select white balance 'pre sets' and then work the color wheel to try to get what you want.
I would term it primitive. Where is the color temperature slider? Where are the RGB sliders? Where is the cropping ability?

as the SD1M will have a huge con list

Example pictures with wide angle lenses will be bad because there is no wide-angle sharp across the frame
etc.

The only thing that will shine is the unique IQ for an APS-C Camera with the right lens.
So do not expect the Dpreview Gold Award for this camera.

This review is from: Nikon F6 Professional SLR 35mm Film Camera Body (Electronics)

Camera will not work with CompactFlash or other digital media cards. You must buy a cartridge of tape, which allows for just 24 shots. No LCD screen for image playback. Extremely frustrated and returned item.

the review will do more harm than good to Sigma.
Possibly. But... the SD1 has to be treated as a different kind of beast, like an MF camera would have to be - not because it should be compared to an MF, but because of what it is. It is NOT a camera like any other in its class because it wasn't designed to be. It uses a new and revolutionary sensor that is known to capture an enormous amount of information and the camera not known for its processing speed. So - if you were to compare it with your current crop of CanNikSonOlys, etc. it would be like comparing apples to oranges. It's that simple. I haven't seen an MF review here on DPR - and I have never seen one that compared a MF camera to an APS-C camera - why would you?

We could have a communal cut-and-paste from all the relevant threads here and...

...but then who would care? Not the world at large, I reckon.

Nothing's wrong wit comparing SD1M to cameras targeting the same customes. It's not only legitimate, but also of good interest and value to the readers.

I wouldn't worry about any review. Now that Sigma controls Foveon I expect rapid progress in the next decade compared to the last decade. The SD1 was announced in Sept 2010. In six months that will be two years ago. I bet Foveon is already almost done with the next chip. I bet we'll see that in eighteen months.
