Poll: which FX

1. I really don't know. Marketing is starting to get to me. I had no intention of buying a D300 in the same year I bought a D200, yet by the time it was released, I went down to my local store and brought one home.

I bought a D700 1.5 years ago. I was just hoping for a D700s - same, but better high ISO. The high ISO performance of the D800 has changed my mind that the D800 isn't as good in low light as the D700. The only issue I have with the D800 is the relatively low FPS. (I shoot a D300 and a D700 with grip and EL4 battery, and I like that 8 fps).

I'm coming around to the D800, probably not the D800e.

I'm just a windfall away from buying a D800, and it's likely I'll get one this year. Hopefully there will be stock on hand!

Maybe I'll not have money right away, and when I do a D800s will be out, with a couple more FPS.

2. No. I think I really do like the idea of all those megapixels. It will help with the wildlife photography I do, since I don't have 500+ mm lenses. And the file sizes don't scare me. At this point I'd rather have the resolution than the speed.

3. No. I have two DX cameras. I want two FX cameras. (Carry two bodies, and have a smooth lens transition). I'd pair my D700 with a D800.

D800E ordered 5 hours after announce from B&H; D4 planned later this year. Plan to sell my trusty old D300 after that and keep all my gorgeous 2.8 AFS glass. My computer can handle it all (i920 OCed to 4.0GHz, 300GB RAID SSDs, 12GB RAM, 6TBs of RAID storage a Sapphire toxic 4GB 5850 graphics (for the video). And of course my Epson 7880 24" printer for those big tasty prints.

There are lots of threads demanding a new D700. This thread isn't about whether or not that's what you want, it's trying to discover whether it would be worth Nikon's while. So, three questions.

1. Nikon's new FX range is D4 and D800(E). Do you intend buying either of these (or both or more than one)? Please be honest, window shopping doesn't count.
Ordered D800E.
2. If Nikon introduced a D800H, D800 with D4 sensor and 6FPS (8 with grip), otherwise as D800, for a list price of $3000, would you buy this? If so, and you had intended buying a D4 or D800, would you buy the D800H instead or as well?
Not for me; hi-ISO with the D800E is great..
3. If Nikon introduced a D600, FX version of D7000 with D4 sensor, 6FPS (max, no speedup with grip), 97% VF, for a list price of $2400, would you buy this? If so, and you had intended buying a D4, D800 or D800H, would you buy the D600 instead or as well?

After the D800E, I do not need a DX camera.

1. I have a pre-order at B&H for the D800.

2. Potentially interesting, as I don't really care about the 36 MB image sizes on the D800. Had this been on offer at the release of the D800, I might well have opted for it then -- but see no good reason to "switch" to that after having committed to a D800.

3. I don't quite get how you come at this "option" (other than as a FX successor to

the D7000); my reaction is the same as for question 2 (with the additional nudge of a lower price... :-)) $2400 is definitely "nice" in contrast to $3K.

Probably as an alternative to current D800

Would be just what I wanted

I dont print big enough to warrant the extra pixels and so the processing cost and computer / storage upgrades are in addition to the cost of the D800

As an amateur it's a lot of costs for my new camera - I would have bought a D700 if they were not ridiculously overpriced - my D200 broke and so am without camera - When I see used D700 s (with suspiciously low activations or normal elevels of activations) selling on Ebay for 70% of a new D800 (great price of £2000 as opposed to £2300 ish) then the economics point to buying a new D800 - something that is overkill for my modest needs

I will be buying a D800, detail captured is amazing. Will wait to see more real life samples before deciding if to get the "E" or not, I'm in no hurry.

No

When I want high FPS I'll fire up my trusty D700. 12MP @ 8FPS and I already own it. It can be bought new for less than the other options, and 2nd hand for much less. An option that seems to be overlooked on here...

As well.

I will buy one of those but not until the production models are reviewed and I have held them in my hand will I make a decision. I am looking forward to owning my first FF camera.

In addition to the newer model, I may buy a D700 or a 5d2 as well if I can find one cheap enough possibly used or new.

D600 would be my choice, the Size of my D7000 is the bulkiest i am willing to carry around. in Film days i gave away for free my F601 and replaced with N65.

Thanx for the thread

1. Possibly, waiting to see how it performs when in general use with 'average' photographers.

2. Definitely, I can't afford a D4 which would be my first choice.

3. No

No, this seems the least attractive. Lower-level body, lower-level AF - these attributes are as important to me as sheer sensor performance.

What did seem an attractive alternative to the D800 is either 1) a D3s sensor in a D700 body for around $1900, or 2) a D3s sensor in a D800 body for about $2400.

But as time has passed, the D800 as-is seems like the best option of all.
