eBay Scam?

There's a camera for sale at eBay for a price that's "too good to be true." The person selling this camera is a business person travelling in Spain (with broken English). She needs to ship the camera from Spain and here's how it can be done to protect seller and buyer, "THE WAY TO PAY : I do bussines only by Money Gram or Western

wire transfer I can't accept other methods of payment for the moment

This is a popular scam, in many places you do not even need to present ID they just need the number.

They will just walk into any old WU branch and take the money, and you'll be out some hard earned dough, really at that point you'd be better off just to burn the money, at least you'll get some sort of satisfaction.

w/u is not meant to act like an escrow service. It is meant to transfer money to someone you know.

Ask them to use a known escrow site, like http://www.escrow.ca , they'll run and hide.

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck ...

I wrote back and asked how she could possibly offer this camera at the price she has asked. Here is her answer...

Here the answer I get when I suggest escrow...

if the money are on the name of your wife how can I
retry the money?Maybe if I speak with someone and make
a fake ID but I am married and also have childrens I
can't risk to spent 6 to 8 years in jail for such
amount of money.Would you?The police in now days is
every where and they will catch me in a few days.Also
you have all my details.So if you can trust me you
will not lose not a cent and maybe in future we will

Yes, Mr. Bill, I already know, but I think that publicizing these things helps others who might get sucked in. Someone has a bid on this camera. Someone doesn't know better...unless it's a seller's bid...could be!

Feedback is no guarantee.
I bought my E20n though ebaY.

I was vacillating between one brand new one for $900 with over 900 positive feedbacks no negatives and a used one 10 months old with accessories zero feedback (new ebaYer) for $1100.

I went with the latter after emailing the sender.
I received an as new E20n and accessories. ( only 74 shots taken)
The biders on the new one received the shaft.

So while feedback can be a good indicator it's not absolute.

It is an old scam - I'm actually surprised they are still trying to do it.

I've seen this happen a few times; One time someone made up a couple new ebay accounts (with the name "scambuster45445" or the like) and bid the auction into the thousands of dollars. After the auction ends, the seller is on the hook for a percentage of the ending price - but the buyer was fake. Of course they can submit a request for a refund - but it takes 48 hours to get the refund - and I think they take the money from your account immediately, and I think you have to wait 10 days before asking for a refund.

At any rate - it stops the unknowing people from bidding: "hmmm, $42459 for a used e10??? I'll pass".
