Nothing new here, another on the fence guy who was reading all the posts and could not decide between the S70 and the 505V.

For others still on the fence here are the reasons why I finally decided on the S70 for me.

1) Size, I have lugged my FD90 up 3 mountains in 3 months its size has been a bind, too big to slip in my pocket and who wants to stop and take a camera out or their back pack when they are gasping for air :^)

Looking at the 505V I think that it would have been even more of a problem to carry, keep clean and undamaged on backpacking and climbing trips.

2) I decided that the view finder was worth it for me again because of the outdoor use in Sunny conditions and also as a way to save battery power on long trips without electricity.

3) Faster lense for low light and night shots.

I will probably end up keeping the FD90 just for the 8X optical lens and as a backup. Though those 8X or even 16X photos taken with the Mavica FD90 are never the best they are fun to take and are shots I would not have at all otherwise.

As an aside for all those who are worried about damaging their digital cameras last year I dropped my first digital camera a mavica FD7 into a tide pool!!

It quickly died and the 3V battery in the front half melted. The next day when it had dried out I popped another 3V battery into it and it came back to life and is still working today.

Cheers.

Us S70 users should throw a party every time someone decides on buying the S70...hehe :)

Guy,

Congrats on your choice!

First seeking out your needs is the best you can do. My decision took also took a few months, but then you know the pro's AND con's of your camera to be.

It's much easier because you have accepted that there is no perfect camera on the market, but for your specific needs you've chosen the one that mostly fits your purpose.

Therefore mentioning your reasons for buying your camera is very important, other people might have the same needs, but haven't considered these reasons.

Now the decision time is over, time for shooting!

Greetings, Derk

Hi Guy,

I have a S70 too and this little gem just keeps impressing me more and
more everyday. For regular outdoors shots just set everything to AUTO,
use your viewfinder and let the Zeiss optics take over and then get ready
to get blown away (!) The S70 is one kick-@ss P&S camera. My feeling is
that when I see a D1 quality digicam selling for
of years ) then I'll get that one too. That way I'll have excellent fully manual
camera as well as an excellent p&S camera in the S70. Vivid colors,
maximum resolution, incredible detail, excellent sharpness right out to the
edges of the frame, fast lens, yep that's the S70.....

enjoy it like a fine wine...

Cheers

This is very strange. Now, when I check the simian's profile, I see my email address and my postings. I'm writing this to Phil.

Hi there Guy,

You have made an excellent choice. The 505V is a truely remarkable camera as well. I've had my S70 for about 3 months and I am so happy with it. Its very portable and takes wonderful shots.

But it doesn't work like that, you can change your email address, but you still can't show up as THAT person when you click on the user's profile. A unique user number is stored in the cookie file, that's what's necessary to mimic a person. Try it, change your email address to anyone else's here, and put their name instead, if you click on your member profile, it'll still show your previous posts under the name pondria. Anyhow, we'll know whether or not it's your, no idiot can ruin your reputation in here that easily :)

Guy
Glad you decided on a wonderful camera. Here is an example of the
lovely pictures you can take with it. I have found S70 and 505 pictures are
more alive than those from other cameras posted in various sites.

In daylight, auto everything or using A.Priority is best. These cameras need light so make sure there is adequate light. I find that flash pictures are not good unless you are less than 7 feet from the camera. Unfortunately I tend to take pictures of groups of friends so that I am at least 10-12 feet from them.

The lack of light is what makes WB go crazy. I have ordered the F1000 flash and waiting for it's arrival, but it could be a long time with the backlog.

Enjoy.
