My sister (much older than I) refuses to get a computer. I would like to create cd-r's of my digital pictures so I can share them with her. I have come across some info on burning cd's in cvd format. But the picture quality suffers a lot in this process. But at least I can send them to her and she can play them on her dvd player.

Anybody have a recommendations on hardware/software that can give better quality slideshows that can be played on a dvd player.

Thanks in advance

Pinnacle Studio does a great job of this even though it is for movies it does a great job on slideshows including music and transitions. Version 8 is out now, but I am using version although I have 8 I have not installed it yet. If you check the bargain sites you can find very good deals on these. I got 8 for 10 bucks after rebate.

Check out http://www.ahead.de and download nero burning rom v5.5, I think it is a 30 day trial. I use this all the time and it works a treat. This is great if you just want to create a basic slideshow, if you want menus and whatnot then you may need something a little more complex.

FYI Some DVD players don;t like CDR's, my Sony will only read CD-RW's. Also I VCD's need to be burned in TAO (Track-At-Once) mode and not DAO (Disc-At-Once) - that had me stumpted for a little while.

I just went through a search for the same thing. There are two ways of doing a dvd slide show (at least according to the information I found). One actually creates a vcd format (mpeg1) "video" of the slideshow. The pictures are fairly low resolution in this format (something like 320x240). This is the format that can include special "transitions" between images. The second way is still a vcd (mpeg1) format, but the pictures are stored in separate data files at a higher resolution. Somehow the mpeg file just calls up pictures from the separate data files. The images in the data file are somewhere around 800x600 pixels (which is alot of information for a tv) and they look great. Slideshows in this format cannot support fancy transitions but can support menus and background music.

I finally decided on Ulead DVD PictureShow. It uses the high resolution technique. It also lets you put multiple slideshows on a single cd, with a customizable menu that comes up when you load the cd for accessing the individual slideshows. The thing I don't like about it is that I can't automatically have the software pick a duration for each slide so the slideshow ends when my chosen background music ends. It just repeats the music file until the slides are done, then abruptly cuts off.

I downloaded a copy directly from the Ulead website. It's about $30 as a download.

I also have been using the Ulead DVD PicShow. The quality of the pictures are outstanding. I miss the transitions but the resolution makes up for it.

Pinnacle's Stuio 7/8 also does a great job !

Pinnacle Studio handles the song timing thing. It will create a VCD file or an SVCD and uses menus to allow more than one slide show on a disk. With version 7 burning is done in another program such as Nero. I think Version 8 has it's own burning software, but I haven't tried version 8 yet.

I have a apex brand dvd player (cheap from walmart - $70) that plays cd's with jpeg files. Just burn to cd like I always to to archive my pics. The apex dvd player comes up with a screen showing the filenames on the disc, you can then open any file, and go to any particular pic or do a slide show of the entire file. Pics look great and I don't have to do anything different than I do normally. Mine is model 1100.

The trial version recognized my Philips cd burner without problems.

I have a Mintek player that plays the jpeg cds as well, but other people I want to share photos with don't. Also, the vcd slideshows transition from picture to picture faster then the jpeg disks do (at least on my player - unless I make a special cd of lower resolution jpegs, maybe?) and starting a slideshow from the menu created by Ulead PictureShow is nicer than using the directory browsing interface on my DVD player.

Hi David,

I have Nero and want to burn a VCD of still pictures. I haven't used Nero other than using it to make backup of my photos. I appreciate that you can show me how to burn such a still photo CD playable on an ordinary DVD player. I'm a novice on mpeg and VCD formats.

I have made about 5 slide show using nero 5.5 and have yet to get one to work. I have tried them a few differant ways using cd-r, but still no success.

When I put it in my DVD player, it just keeps reading the disk and after 3-4 min it states that I have a incompatable disk.

Is the problem my DVD player or what. Its only around a year old and its a RCA. Though the funny thing is that it will play songs off a CD-R.

If you are using the Nero Wizard on start-up, select Video CD. Instead of dragging mpeg or avi files in to the box, drag your photos, jpeg only. When playing in the DVD player, use the FWD and REV to step thru the pictures. Works for me on a Yamaha DVD player. Any player that reads VCD's should work, most will play vcd's.

Eddie,

I didn't mean to ignore your request for help, I just haven't checked in for a few days. Sorry, but I can't help you with Nero. I haven't used it. It seems to be fairly popular though. If you do a search for Nero and VCD you may find it has been discussed in a forum already, or you could try posting a request for help as a new thread.

Good luck,
David

I created a DVD picture show for my mother and mother-in-law for christmas using ArcSoft ShowBiz and MyDVD. ShowBiz gives you great control over length of scene, transition, sound (2 simultaneous tracks), and effects for the show creation. After you create the show, you produce it and send it to MyDVD for mastering.

I have a DVD+RW drive, and have yet to find a player that the DVD's won't play in. My mother-in-laws player would not play any CDR/CDRW, but played a DVD+R with no problem.

It is a very pricey option but I don't think anything beats Adobe Premiere for doing slide shows, especially if you want to put it on a DVD. Takes a little while to learn but the results are absoloutley stunning

David,

Thanks for the tip on Ulead DVD PictureShow! I downloaded the demo and it works great. I haven't tried it in any other DVD machine other than a Sony, so time will tell if there are compatibility problems. Overall though, this program does it all (almost).....
