choppy video

Hi everyone.

My first time on here.

I have had the T2i for over a year and have had no problem with video until recently. The videos now are turning out choppy and occasionally colours will flash (almost as if chunks of data are missing for certain parts of the picture).

I use a Sandisk 16GB class 4 (came with camera) and a Patriot 8GB class 6. Both these cards produce the same results. I have used the standard 18-55mm lens and a 50mm lens. Still the same results.

I was hoping the problem was with one of the SD cards, but both cards produce the same results. I am crossing my fingers there is not something wrong with the camera. And as I said, in the past the videos turned out fine.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Just a guess but it sounds like something on your computer is using needed CPU cycles. Has anything changed in your configuration? Anti-virus? Does this happen with videos that you've saved previously?

  • How do they play on the camera viewfiner?
-consider a class 10 card (but I suspect the problem isn't the card if you have gotten to the playback stage using the same protoco as before

Thanks for the reply.

They play fine on the view finder of the camera.

So I am thinking it is not the camera, but rather the computers. but the weird part is that I have two computers, both pretty capable machines.

1. quad-core, 4gb ram, 1gb video memory. that is a desktop about 4 years old
2. brand-new gaming laptop: i7, 8gb ram, high end video card

I know this is not a computer forum, but the old videos use to play fine, now they are choppy. At first I was worried about my camera, but all signs are indicating it is ok.
still very perplexing.

If videos which once played well are now playing imperfectly, I agree that it's most likely your computer. Can you take your video to a friend's computer and see how it plays there?

I am far from a computer expert, but here are some things which were suggested to me when I had a similar problem:

Likely culprits are dust in the computer, with heat buildup (how long has it been since you took off the case and very carefully vacuumed out the insides?) and/or the graphics card. Check the seating of the graphics card, be sure the card itself is free of dust. Download the newest drivers for it.

Try defragmenting your hard drive. Try removing spyware or junkware that is lurking in the background and slowing the CPU. Virus protection software sometimes slows operation. You can turn it off while watching video.

Check your program manager to see what other operations are employing the CPU.

So, are you saying that playback is screwing up on both of your machines? If that's so I would suspect a virus that you managed to transfer from one machine to the other.

Hi Modusoperandi,

Did you shoot at 1080 24p, or 720 30p? And what was your speed? If you shot at a high speed - you will get unstable video. For instance the ideal speed for 24p is 50, 60 or 125 at most. Not a good idea to shoot higher than that. Let me know if this was your problem. --Arlene

Sounds like it may be hard drive related ? You mentioned you have two computers. Are you playing back off an external hard drive ? can you try another drive ?

Problem is fixed.
VLC media player 2.0 is known as buggy for playing .mov files.
I reinstalled an earlier version of the media player.
all is good!

thanks.
