D90 and the weather

Hello group,

I know my D90 is not as weatherproof as the more expensive models. But I'd like to know just how vulnerable it is to rain, and so forth. Does anyone have experience with leaks in their D90s? Where are the most vulnerable water-entry points? Will a light drizzle pose a danger? Thanx for any guidance you can offer.

There is only one way to find out if it is vulnerable and that is to let it get damaged. So, I take precautions in even a light drizzle. You can buy some waterproof gear or use a plastic bag if you like to shoot in wet weather.

the D90 is not weather sealed.

I would advise that you protest the camera with a rain cover whenever using it in the rain. Mist and fog do not call for that. Snow might if it is melting on contact.

Even Nikon's pro models with weather sealing are vulnerable to rain. I did a 24 hour coverage of hurricane Irene. It rained about 4 inches in 4 hours at one point. I had a D700 in a rain cover. No problems. Then I shot a night football game in a light rain and did not cover the camera as it just seemed to be so light as not cause worry. That mistake cost me $350. A small amount of water got past the compact flash compartment door. That shorted out the circuit. Bottom line was a week at Nikon Pro Service repair and $350 gone.

As with the D80 the D90 is very vulnerable where the camera strap lugs enter the camera. I did try to put a thin layer of silastic at the point, but unfortunately it did'nt adhere well. When I shoot with the D90 and its raining I make sure I have an umbrella and a plastic bag to cover the camera when not shooting. I did recently buy the D7000 which claims to be water resistant, however I still intend to use the umbrella and the bag. I have never had water cause a problem with my shooting. Just use common sense and a few precautions and you should be fine. If its drizzling cover up. Good Luck and enjoy.

Hmm... I have d90 almost since the beginning
and I would say I've been never worried when it got wet.
It is maybe my luck, but never had any problem. Indeed use your common sense
then it should be good enough.

I've never knew that is not weather proof, maybe i start to take care of it from now on :)
