Hi all. I had quite a long chat and play with the 5mkiii. I asked the canon rep about AF and he stated that the AF is better than the 1div but not as good as the 1dx. I was happy with this as was hoping he would would say "nearly as good as the 1div" so for them to say better was a nice suprise. The build felt better than the mkii.

I am still undecided due to the high cost but it seem that this will be the best Canon af'ing camera this side of the 1dx.

Unforunatly I was not able to use my own card as this was a pre-production I handled.

Hmm did you manage to play with one for yourself...

one thing to hear what the rep say..and another thing to play and be able to feel it for yourself...

Yea, I had about half an hour with it. The focus seemed fine but of course I had no way of checking out the shots on a PC. I have no reason to think why it would not be as good as the iv to be honest. I know Canon has messed up before but I think this part of the camera is good. My main concerns will be that IQ at lower ISO is not enough to make it worth the jump from my current cameras. Guess in a couple of weeks we will hear more!

Did you ask him in what sense did he mean the AF is better than the 1D IV and less than the 1D X?

On paper the 5D3 AF would be faster, more accurate and better in lower light than the 1D4 (which would put it ten steps ahead of the 5D2). It would also have better metering, with evaluative (but not spot) metering linked to all AF points. The 1DX would be better because it has more advanced metering and faster because of a dedicated AF/metering CPU, but not any more accurate than the 5D3.

In another thread I made the point that the 5D3 trumps the 1D4 in everything but build quality, sealing, battery life (without the grip) and speed. It will likely have better IQ, lower high-ISO noise, better AF and quieter operation, with a more advanced viewfinder and a few other bells and whistles. Considering the 1D4 costs $1500 MORE than the 5D3, that's impressive!

Exactly what Guy said. I do not think there will be a massive difference between the 5diii and 1dx.

I really wish they would have implemented spot AF linked to the AF point though.. I love that feature on my 1dsii but I guess they have to keep some bells for the 1 series.

Why not as good? Shouldn't it be the same as 1Dx?
1 DX has 100k RGB exposure sensor which detects subjects for the AF and helps tracking, along with DIGIC 4 processor to do the processing for it. 5DIII does not have this.

Not to talk of 14fps v 6. They're worlds apart...

It might be better but getting accurate tech info from a Canon rep is like learning about car technology from a car salesman.

I believe that it does do the saqme thing with it's 63 zone two layer metering sensor, but it is not going to be as good as teh 1Dx in this regard. It will probably be quite an improvement over the 5DII though.

I think that is Canon's perspective on it as well. It does everything the 1DsIII did (except built in grip and build) for $4500 less.

That's right, an even better way to look at it. It's also faster than the 1DsIII with better AF. I remember at the time drooling over the 1DsIII as my "perfect camera", although the 5D2 came close (and certainly did everything I needed for weddings and portraits, travel and landscapes, and the odd wildlife shoot). The 5D3 IS my perfect camera!

Now, if the 1Dx had 22MP and silent shutter I think I'd buy two and never go back to the camera store ;)

The 5D3 may be the same speed (for the price compared to the D800 and other issues it better be).

The 5D3 has a dedicated AF CPU 4x faster than the one in the 1D4. Hopefully the 1DX does not have one 8x faster :).
