Having owned XZ-1 for almost 2 weeks, I am very curious about base ISO noise. So I did some long exposure tests and was pleasantly surprised by the actual result. Yes there is noise in ISO 100 RAW files but they could be easily cleaned in post. The dynamic range is obviously more limited than DSLR sensor but I can still twist around tone curve a bit. Here are 2 set of night shots showing original & processed images. RAW files were processed in Adobe Photoshop ACR. C&C welcome.

I really like no 2. The sudden appearance and clarity of the mountains surprised me so much that I had to scroll back up to see whether they really were in the original image or had just been photoshopped in :p

Im an xz1 user myself and have always been pleasantly surprised by how well it does in my very inexperienced hands

Thanks. To me XZ-1 has lots of surprises: really nice lens, very effective IS in slow shutter speed, quite fast focusing speed, its colour is actually very similar to my Sony full frame camera.

Why were you shooting at ISO 100 at night? You can easily go up to ISO 400 with little noticeable increase in noise.

Also, night noise from XZ-1 JPGs can be effectively and best removed by using the free Noiseware Community Edition.

ISO 100 can bring out the best dynamic range from this sensor so I have better headroom to "torture" RAW files, as well less noise too. Of course in everyday shooting I always use higher ISO in lowlight situation, and find XZ-1's noise is not bad at all. Cheers!
