DiMAGE 7Hi
Mr. Christian Barg if I had access in my town to this two cameras in the same store I could have done that, but I don't. I was planning to buy them in the Internet. But it looks like I was looking for an intelligent person in the wrong place.

Thank you

Have you tried to ask the same question in Minolta forum?
I hope they are more friendly :-)

Hello Miguel !

The most intelligent thing I can do for you, short of testing the cameras myself, is reading Phil Askey's reviews of the cameras involved and then give you the relevant test results :

Auto focus delay :

Minolta : Full wide(28 mm): 0.9 s , Full tele(200 mm): 1.1 s

Nikon : Full wide(35 mm): 0.6 s , Full tele(280 mm): 1.0 s

Hope this helps.

Sorry if I have offended you in any way.

Happy 2003.

Notilad,

Why are you here in this thread advising people on issues that you know little or nothing about? If you haven't noticed, it gives me heart burn when I see false or incomplete information disseminated. People like you turn these threads into a camera bashing session and I was wondering why?

If you need "research" to do like your "Camera Defender List", see if you don't think my responses fall into one of two categories; 1. Facts (as in a reference source to prove them) and/or 2. Common sense (as in a logical way to do things). I'll gladly reneg any discrepancies that you find, M-Kay?

At this point I would normally say, "Happy Shooting!" but you seem to be too busy with diversions and/or attempted derailments to take any pictures... So how about "Have a Nice Day!"

DR,

He is just trying to get the friction going, he even admitted he likes it. His credibility is low, even in his native STF. It's too bad they come over here and get us off cameras and photography. Maybe they aren't happy with something....lol

DiMAGE 7Hi
MIguel, I see you're still struggling to figure out which of these two cameras to buy. I don't think the metric you've chosen here is very meaningful, as in most cases a digital photographer will prefocus by holding the shutter half way down, and then compose before taking a picture. Reading your archive of posts, I sense you are frustrated in trying to get an answer to the question, "which is the better camera". As helpful as people try to be around here, there is no answer to that question. Both are good general purpose tools, technical marvels, and you'll learn to use and love which ever one you buy.

This guy was helping Matt Cromer with his bashing in the STF. I for one am tired of it.

Miguel,

I dont think he was consiously being nasty on this. Actually, I did exactly what he said. Some people dont do the leg work. I didnt time the focus, but took pictures with both cameras. My buddy bought the minolta, and I went for the Nikon. Neither one of us is unhappy with our decisions. In fact I was the one who did the ground work on finding out about 5mp cameras for the both of us. Spent months researching the issue.

I cannot answer your ? as I did not time them. I can only say that I get focus within a second or so in low light. Occasionally a little longer if there is low contrast. Both cameras have their strong and weak points. I like the manual focus and zoom of the minolta, and the fact you can add filters or lens's right on the end of the lens. I just liked the feel of the nikon better, and felt it was constructed better, but I am partial to nikons. So that is my opinion and answer. Please dont feel nikon owners are rude, if you have a question they will be happy to answer. These guys and gals are great at helping.

Good luck with your hunt for a camera

I must thank you all for the help I received in this matter. Frank, your are correct, I have problems choosing what camera to buy. Here in Puerto Rico I don't have none of them to try on my hands. I must buy using what ever input I receive from current users of both cameras, I must say I'm inclined to buy the Nicon, maybe because I use to have a very old Nicon camera. But this cameras are both expensive, and I can't return one of them to may local store if I found out that I don't like the camera because here they don't have this camera on the counter. I have to buy over the Internet. Mr. Christian Barg I'm really sorry about the way I reacted to your post, but the frustration of going out of Puerto Rico on vacations very soon and not having the "correct" camera really worried me. I thank you all for your help in this matter it has been a very rewarding experience for me, thanks.

Miguel,
Really, don't worry about it. if you want 280mm get the Nikon.
If you want 28mm get the Minolta.

All cameras at this level have difficulty at low light levels when compared to a film SLR pr something like the D100.

Unless you need the zoom or the studio connectivity of the 7Hi, you could try the D7i as I believe it's by far the cheapest ( please disregard this if it is not true in your country) and is still a superb camera.

Signed - A humble D7 owner (and that's still a good camera!)- but wouldn't mind a 5700 either!
Best Regards,

Miguel, don't feel alone. I live minutes from Best Buy, Good Guys, Circuit City, and Ritz Camera stores, and it was still frustrating to pick out a camera. A solution might be to buy a good but discontinued camera, like the CP995, CP5000, Olympus 4040, or Sony 707, for a low price, and figure out what you really want in a state of the art model as you gain experience. If you take good care of it, you can recover most of your money when you're ready to upgrade. And the cameras I mentioned may be discontinued, but they're far from obsolete, and will give you excellent pictures while you learn.
