Who thinks Canon made a mistake not naming it 3D? (nt)

I do. I think the Canon executives should get on their knees, pull out their blades and do the only honourable thing - Seppuku :)

I have to be rude but does it really matter?

most other camera manufacturers manage to release newer/updated products at the same price or even for less than the existing models. Canon for some reason chose not to.

A "3D" priced at £3000 in the Uk still wouldn't compare favourably to a D800 at £2400.

Calling any 2-dimension camera a "3D" is just stupid marketing move, imo.

60D crop. 40D crop. 5D full frame. 7D crop. Makes no sense whatsoever.

At least "5DIII" is closer to the truth.

The 5D has made a name for itself. Lots of pros are using it for video. There is no need to use a cheap trick like Canon did with the 7D to try to sell it for a higher price than it could with another name.

They will have room now for a high MP camera with descent autofocus and eye control.
That will be introduced next year... Canon xD (because 3d might imply 3D).

xD for extreme resolution.

Doesn't matter one way or the other. 5D3 preorders are hot right now. These things are selling like hotcakes.

2D or 4D might have worked.

Canon's room for a differentiator is limited now - a 36MP+ machine with 5DII style focus system? Won't sell unless the price is low, real low. What price point would it have given the D800/5d3 market?

The 5D3 already cost more than a (roughly) equal D800 - MP aside of course.

If you ask me the Canon strategy is in tatters :(

The only room is for a 5D3 with high MP count is if they drop the 5D3 by a $1000 or by releasing a 6D that's crippled with AF/FPS.
