New Canon sensors..... when?

A lot of us are aware of current limitations of Canon sensors (from their 1100D to the 5D2 and I'm betting the new 5D3). For me, the most annoying is their (full 2 stops) lack of DR against Sony's sensors (used, AFAIK, in Sony, Nikon and other cameras). Here is a very detailed explanation, with test included, about what is wrong with Canon.

So, my question is, is there a way to know when are their next generation of sensors coming to the market? I'm invested with Canon (4 lenses) and I don't want to lose money, changing all my gear to other brand, only to realize (maybe, what, in September?) that Canon has launched new cameras with new sensors that are way better than current Sony offers....

So just wait until September (photokina), then decide.

I agree that Canon sensors have come up short over the past few years. Surely they have something new in the works...?

I really hope they have been working undercover... because you can't keep selling mediocre sensors and expect your fanboys will support you forever... no matter what their marketing people claims... 2 full stops of DR and the high ISO noise will scare away more and more customers (like me).

I'm against ANY fanboyism... I believe we, as consumers, can and must demand ONLY THE BEST PRODUCTS. If company A is unable to provide them, I couldn't care less about their marketing efforts... I will change to company B products...

Sure, it is not that easy, as every company have their strengths and weaknesses, because we live in a world in which COSTS and PROFITS are much more important than customer satisfaction...

I would have thought that with a pseudonym like yours you would have been more aware or at least more compassionate. So, any new sensors like the G1X, 5D3, or 1DX? The larger sensors haven't been tested yet so its too early to tell if Canon have improved dynamic range. We certainly have no way of knowing where Canon are going after these.

I will point out, however, that if you actually look at the DxO data for the cameras you mention, the Canon and Nikon sensors are pretty similar above about ISO 400. Below that the Nikon sensors continue to improve while the Canon sensors level out. Pretty dramatic looking, but the Canon sensors have leveled out well above the line DxO identifies as excellent. They are all competitive in the other measurements. I think you can get excellent imagery from any of these sensors. Other camera choice considerations such as ergonomics or feature set or lens selection are probably much more significant to the overall photographic outcome.

I fear that even saying this much you will label this a fanboy response an dismiss it. Your rhetoric seems to poison the well for rational discussion on the subject. Very un-Budhist of you.

First, ad hominem is a pseudo argument, second, being compassionate does not mean you are obtuse or unable to demand quality products from a commercial enterprise.

No. Canon current generation lacks badly (more than 2 full stops) in the Dynamic Range department. It is simply unacceptable.

Again, ad hominem, are you familiar with logical fallacies? I guess not. No, Im not a fanboy of anything, I couldn't care less about brands. I want the best product for my money, period. Now, if you really want my opinion, money should not exist, and the whole society is based on the wrong (highly inefficient) assumptions. And religions have nothing to do with this issue. Thanks for taking your time to write and state your opinion, that I appreciate.

I did not attack you, just your harsh, inflexible rhetoric which I found surprising considering your pseudonym. My interpretation of the overall DxO data is different than yours. Cheers.

Welcome to the Canon Talk Forum, the place to discuss Canon compact digital cameras."

If, indeed, you're asking about sensors for Canon's compact digital cameras, let me anwer that one for ya: beats me.

Wait, you're asking about their DSLRs? Go to Canonrumors.

no problem, I might sound harsh, thank you for pointing it out, and yes, we can disagree in our interpretation :)

Cool, namaste, 'Aita Pea Pea, no worries.

For Canon fans, DxOMark tests comparing the Canon T3i (Overall Score 65) to the Nikon D5100 (Overall Score 80) are kind of annoying. :-)

The Canon T4i should to do better.
