Hey, I have some questions about Sigma 50mm 1.4. I just sold my Canon 50mm 1.4, and now looking to get a Sigma, however some of my friends told me that it got some degrees of focus shift issues generally, my body is 5D Mark II, I would definitely go to my local store to get one. I'm still pretty concern about the problem, but want to the lens out. Please give me some suggestions, cheers :)

I have one, I bought it instead of the Canon 1.4, and I would do it again. (It is used with both 5D and 5D II).

I have no issue with the focus point being off with distance, but I do have the issue of the focus point moving with changing apartures. As it is fully open as you focus, and step down when the picture is taken, that can move the focus a bit. It does focus quite spot on at about 1.6 or so.

Despite that, I would buy it again - I like it's bokeh. And it is not like the alternatives are perfect either.

Thank you very much.

Shooting at f1.4 is tricky and some will blame the lens rather than their technique, when up close you have a very shallow depth of field, amazingly small.

I did have issues with it in street photography but when I switched to all focus points on, my problems resolved and I got some great sharp shots. Some lenses that first came out had some issues, these were resolved. The Canon 50 f1.2 L lens had focusing issues as well, and it cost significantly more.

The Sigma 50 f1.4 is a very good lens.

rsn48 is spot on 'Shooting at f1.4 is tricky and some will blame the lens rather than their technique, when up close you have a very shallow depth of field, amazingly small.'

What can I say? I had a hard time figuring this out, so I ended up testing the camera and lens with the intent of correcting through micro adjustment. With everything on a stable tripod and tethered shooting. What I found was that the focus point moved with changes in aperture. I don't see how that could somehow be user fault?

That said, overall I agree that this lens, and Sigma in general, have been given a much harder time than it deserves. I have several L lenses as well as several Sigma EX lenses - I'm quite happy with all of them. (Actually the Canon 24-105 would be my worst I think).
