Just purchased a Coolpix 4500 and need to buy additional memory. CompUSA has an advertised special for PNY 128MB Compact Flash cards at $ 29.99 each through Dec 21 2002. Does anyone have any experience good or bad with this manufacturer? This appears to be a great door buster price. However, if it is not an appropriate choice for this camera or of lesser quality, I will be wasting my money. Should I just wait for a good advertised special on Lexar or SanDisk which are approved Memory Cards ?
Thanks, I look forward to your comments.

I wondered the same thing, then finally decided against it. I just went to the dell website:

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productlisting.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&category_id=476

and picked up the 256MB 12x Lexar for my 995/602. Final price after rebate will be $84 shipped 1-2 day for free. You can get the 128MB for $42 also shipped free. I don't know if the PNY deal had a rebate, so that might be a downside of this deal, but for Lexar, it was worth it for me.

For me this was $115.95 -10% -$20 rebate = $84

To me, this seemed worth it because i don't mind the rebate or waiting on it to get here, especially for the Lexar compatibility/quality.

Just an update since my last post. The memory already arrived! Order was placed 11:30 Pm 12/18, Airborne express just dropped it off today 12:20 PM 12/20! Got to love 1-2 day free shipping (would have cost $12.99 shipping). On top of that it's the full sealed retail package. As usual (with all my previous Dell purchaces), the invoice will be sent seperately in 1-2 days, then I can send the rebate.

ps. rebate valid until 12/31, who knows when the free 1-2 day shipping and 10% off end.

I purchased the PNY 128MB CF yesterday at CompUSA and have been using it in my CP5700. Seem to work fine. I intentionally filled it up to sort of check out the whole thing. No problems. I've PNY memory in my PC before and have used PNY CD-R in burning CD -- never a problem.

Hope that helps.

To Iris or anybody else:

Just bought the 4500 myself and looking at flash cards. Review here talk about Viking being faster than Scandisk or IBM Microdrive so... now you guys say Lexar? You say Lexar and Scandisk are approved memory cards, approved by whom? I want to get the largest and fastest with of course a reasonable price. Suggestions!!!!

It's right there in your CP4500 guide on page 151. Remember, Microdrive may be big, but it is mechanical and there is the possibility that things can go wrong with mechanical items.

My advice is to buy CF from a company that allows hassle free returns. Viking seems to be a favorite, but I've heard of too many compatability problems with the 4500 to recommend it. Luckily Amazon.com took mine back. Ridata seems to be glitchy with 4500 too, also a return for me. Mixed reviews on the Microdrive, the price/performance vs risk just isn't there. SanDisk has a reputation for being slow. I finally settled on a boring 'ole Lexar 256 12x and couldn't be happier, plus there seem to be manufacturer and store rebates all the time. good luck.

A friend of mine used the same card in his 4300, and got "system error" on his LCD screen. When he put the "Starter" card back in (a Lexar), the camera worked fine. Not to say that this would happen to you, just somthing to think about. I personally would avoid cards that have "barn burner" prices, there must be a reason they are selling so cheap...
