Looking for a zoom lens to take sports shots of my kids - ski racing & soccer. Which one would you recommend without breaking the bank? I have a digital canon rebel.

Without going to the "L" series lenses I would try the Canon EF 28-200MM/F3.5-5.6 USM. Nice range and decent f stop but no IS.

I did have one of the gray lenses 70-200 that was around $700, but lost it and not sure which one I had. Is this one considerably better than the 28-200 mentioned? Or would the 28-200 take decent pictures? I just want something that will give me good pictures.

I am not entirely familiar with the canon rebel but i have a sigma 70-mm 2.8 that has done me really proud (it was my first 'proper' lens after a friend lent me an older canon one for a bit I think similar to the suggestion above) I still have it and it was not expensive, you should get a second hand one quite easily. It is pretty fast and quite versatile. But the canon suggested should be ok for most things with kids in them unless its very low light.

Depending on budget, get the 55-250, the 70-300, the 70-200 f/4, the 70-200 f/2.8, the 70-300 L, then perhaps the 70-200 IS versions.

Whe shooting moving subjects, shutter speed is more important than IS, so light (f/2.8 over 4 over 5.6) is most important.

If you can live without zoom, a 100 f/2.8 or 85 f/1.8 could be useful, but I think you need more focal length.
