When pressing the command dial to activate the flash I get the message Press and hold To deactivate silent mode. Is this due to buggy firmware (1.11) ? How to remedy this ?

You are in silent mode, flash won't fire. You can take it out of silent mode via the menus or you can just hold down the disp/back button for a few seconds to toggle silent mode off/on.

You may need to slip into something more comfortable and increase the ambiance. Pour your favorite drink and remove any pictures taken by non Fuji film camera's. Maybe now you'll be able to turn your flash on...

Thank you. Not sure why silent mode would affect flash. It sure is a strange camera. Another question; when I press Disp/Back button the flash setting appears for only 1 second not enough time for my big fingers. Can this be altered ?

Silent mode perhaps should be stealth mode as it eliminates warning lights as well as sounds. Lights such as AF help and flash. It's so you can take pictures without atracting attention with sound or flash etc.

Well I've taken ryan2007's advice and poured a big drink. Thanks for advice now I understand the flash set-up.

Man! What a pain in the round bits. I recently got a FujiFilm X-T50 and it has become my absolute favorite camera to carry around (replacing an Olympus OM-D M5 which I still love & use), but having set it up for my normal shooting mode (no sound, electronic shutter[ES]) I had a devil of a time figuring out that BOTH these settings, not one or the other, prevented me from activating the flash. For a while it didn't bother me since I usually shoot without, but I wanted to try something and couldn't. Though the manual does mention that using the ES would cause the flash not to work, I had to dig around the internet to figure out that turning off the sound did so also. In retrospect the menu item 'SOUND & FLASH' should have given me a clue, but 1) I didn't think to look at the sound settings, and 2) why, when you go there, isn't there a toggle for each of those items (on/off for sound; on/off for flash). There are a million features in the menu I may never use, you'd think they could add one more that I would.

I appreciate everyone before me who added to this thread and helped me figure it out.

I suggest you set the shutter to Manual only in one of your Custom settings and Name it Flash. That's what I did with my X-S10. I also have the ISO set to 1600, which avoids the Auto ISO issues when using flash and the aperture set at f 5.6 for a good balance of depth field and flash distance.

IIRC, silent mode invokes the electronic shutter only. The camera physically cannot use the flash because the duration of the flash will always be shorter than the duration of the exposure, and also the camera needs the mechanical shutter to actually trigger the flash.
