NEX-7/Zeiss 24mm - Who Needs 3-D? ..........

Bill,

Thanks for the photos. I want to get the NEX-7 but could not decide which prime lens to use. Your terrific shots have convinced me that the Zeiss 24mm is the lens.
don't forget about the excellent 50mm f/1.8 oss!

Thanks.

You will not regret that decision. I have already found that my 24mm stays on the camera about 90%s of the time. That may change when I get the 50mm OSS lens, but it likely will still be the most used lens.

Lovely shots. Do you know what the max. magnification is on that lens and the min. distance?

Could you run that same shot with noise reduction? I would like to see what the lens can do with someone who knows how to post process...... I have the lens, and get way to much noise at 1600, and would like to know the right way to kill the noise.

The only noise reduction software I have is Noise Ninja. There are no profiles for the NEX cameras on their website, so I am going to have to create my own. Just haven't had time to do that yet. Soon, hopefully.

OW!!! My eye!!

(writes out optician's bill, sends it to Bill)

Lovely shot.. was the colour rendition as reality, or off in any way?
......... when you can get a "flat" photo that jumps at you like this one!

The close-focusing capability of the Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 lens continues to amaze me!

The flowers were under some spotlighting and were actually THAT bright yellow!

I have found the NEX-7 to have the most accurate color rendition, right out of the camera, of any digital camera I have ever owned (provided the camera WB setting is matched to the lighting) ...... including my Nikon D300.

A couple of examples that needed NO color tweaking whatsoever:

(I could have matched the tan paint on the wall with this image.):

(The colors in the mosaic, in the background, and the orange barrel colors are spot on in this image.):

Sounds fantastic!

I'm seriously interested in this camera, but am wary after a few bad cameras (Fuji X10 Orb-maker, N D7000 with oil of sensor constantly, and an Eos 60D that actually had a mis aligned sensor (!!).

Mind if I ask a few questions?

Do you find the movie button annoying - others have reported it as such (I might even super glue the button out of use, if I buy a N-7) (I don't do video, ever)?

Does not having a custom mode hamper you at all? I do like the 3 custom mode on my wife's pana FZ150..

Are there any areas on contention that you find annoying at all?

Oh - there was a report of video overheating the camera - I won't be using the video, but wonder if that might carry over to the high speed shot modes..

Thanks, mate!

I also love the NEX7/24/1.8 combo. Sure, lens is pricey but results equal out. Fit and finish are superior. Without hood (IMHO) balances nicely. Every time I "think" about returning or selling I just cannot make the move. As long as you can afford the extra $$ this is a no-brainer prime.

If it's any correlation, the NEX-7 doesn't have as much of an overheating problem as the 5n (due to the larger body which equals more surface area and volume for heat to disperse). Also, the only reason the camera will stop in burst mode is when the buffer is full, I highly doubt you would "overheat" the sensor in burst unless you were just ratcheting off hundreds of shots at a time.

When I first began using the NEX-7, I inadvertently hit the video button two or three times. Since then, it hasn't happened again. I think it's all in the way you hold the camera. Not a big problem, at least for me.

There are infinite ways to customize the NEX-7, placing the controls on a number of the buttons and dials. A bit confusing at first, but WONDERFUL, once you get rid of the factory defaults and configure them like you want. (NOTE: For those who don't expect to do a lot of videos [me included], it would be nice if a future firmware upgrade would allow the video button to be used for an additional custom setting.)

I don't think overheating will be a problem with the NEX-7, certainly not shooting stills.

So far, I haven't found anything about the camera that really bothers me. It IS very nice to carry around a much smaller kit.....a BIG difference from my old Nikon D300 and all that heavy glass!

Thanks (to you and El Matadurr)..

(El Matadurr - I do understand the buffer deal.. I also agree it's unlikely to over heat on stills.. just checking really)

This seems almost too good to be true - solid camera, excellent performance, high quality images, hugely high resolution AND decent pixel size (which matters) on the sensor. I've seen some sample images and they are beautiful!

Is there a way to 'mimic' a custom type selection? - can you switch from burst mode shots to auto bracket quickly?

Just having the one would make this a definite buy for me - just the ability to switch from bracketing to high speed burst mode, in a button press, is a keeper for sure.

I agree w/ you, Bill. The 24mm is my main lens also; and I have the Sony 18-200mm for everything else. I was thinking I might possibly need a macro lens, but the results you're posting w/ the 24mm suggest I don't need one!

I actually had the Sony 30mm e-mount macro. Tried it out with a few quick photos. It was actually quite decent, but I decided to wait and get a longer-length focal length macro (something in the 35mm equivalent range of 90-125mm).

A BIG factor in that decision was the Zeiss 24mm's excellent close-focus capability.

FYI, here's one image from the Sony 30mm macro:
