Hi all,

Does anybody know if the EM5 with 12-50mm will come with a lens hood for the 12-50mm?

For 43rds lens hoods have always been included as accessoirs, but what about m43rds?

Thanks all!

Cheers,
Hans-Helmut

m.Zuiko lenses typically come w/o hood and you get to buy it separately.

I thought Nikon was unique with that stupid idea of delivering lenses without hood. The 10-30 N1 lens was my first lens which did not come with the hood by default. Nikon delivers only the 30-110 with it. I can't understand that people actually use lenses without hood... I mean, really, especially the 12-50 which is intended to be used under tougher conditions than the other MFT lenses, should be delivered with the hood. OK, no big deal if they make hoods available as well, but really, that’s not a cheap kit lens, so it should be obvious that it is used with a hood, though it makes the camera look larger.

Hmmm..... looking at Oly Sweden, the box contents are without hood.

OK, well that's another 25 quid then :(

I have just seen that the 12-50mm has the same filter size as the 43rds 50mm macro (52mm). Would I be able to use that hood on the 12-50mm or do you think it's likely to add vignetting?

I am in the exciting process of moving from DSLR to MFT so endure me a rookie question. How many people, if any, do you think will always have a protective filter on their MFT lenses? Thanks!

Hi,

My question was about a lens hood, not about a protective filter, such as a UV filter.

I guess the answer is - that depends: You can get very expensive m43rds lenses and on those I personally would certainly put a (high quality) filter.

And a lens hood :)

OK...I'll start. I use one because I live in Phx Arizona. The air is just constantly filled with sand, and after about 5 years my front filter looks "frosted" from the abrasion. That's my reason. Honestly, though, if you don't have that problem, then a lens hood is just as good, maybe better, at protecting the front element.

I suspect you'll hear from a few more folks now....

12mm on the wide end should vignette considerably. But you would be OK using it for 50mm. Of course it would defeat the purpose of the lens if you couldn't zoom with the hood mounted.

Also the 50mm hood most likely will not be able to bayonet onto the 12-50.

Thanks. I have always used a filter to protect the glass and often a hood. The filter does give me some peace of mind but I always wonder if in some way I am degrading the image.

The Nikon 55-200, 70-300, 18-105, to name just a few Nikon lenses, all comes with hoods. But the 18-55 kit lens does not...as do some other Nikon lenses. A mixed bag obviously.

How many Canon lenses (in at least a remotely affordable price range) comes with a hood, by the way?

The mZuiko 18-50 I would still call a rather cheap lens, since it will only add around 2000 sek (or around 200 euros) to the price of the OM-D...

Still silly it comes w/o hood of course!

If you´d shoot at 50mm only = no problem, vignetting wise...

But the 50/2 hood mounts with a bayonet, so then the 18-50mm would have to have the same bayonet, someting I find unlikely...

Box Contents

Lens Cap (LC-52C), Lens Rear Cap (LR-2), Instruction Manual, Olympus Worldwide Warranty Card.

Probably not, as (already noted) the stated box contents only include front and rear lens caps, along with the lens and paperwork. That said, some of the photos of the recent EM-5 press junket in europe shows the lenses being outfitted with some very funky retro rectangular lens hoods. If not, Vello makes a nice modern tulip hood for about $20.

I bet that square piece of plastic shown in the DPReview article goes for $50. No prices and no listing thus far, but the lens hood looks like a nice profit center for Oly.

It looks like the 12-50 will take the same hood as the 9-18...
And I found a source on eBay for under $20

Just checked Olympus Japan site and the LH-55B (that's the one that fits the 9-18) is listed under accessories for the 12-50

...but that won't do any good on it.

I wouldn't spend money on it. Isn't it better to get the proper one? I mean, sure Oly will release one with the lens, or...?
