I used my new NEX 5N yesterday. What a funky little contraption.
One day I stumbled on an Amazon page of cheap adapters for just about every kind of lens I could think of and nearly fell off of my chair. I have a bunch of old film lenses that are gathering dust. I knew immediately that I had to get an e mount camera.
Initial impressions:
1. This camera is way too small. I am not sure why anyone would build something like this. When it comes to photography, big screens and big batteries are good. I love the big APS-C sensor at least. I probably couldn't afford a full frame NEX.
2. The settings are chaos. Half the time, the function you want can't be used with the mode you are using and you have to go to several places to get to the next step. Also, when I handle the camera, I inadvertently in random order press several buttons which places me deeply in the menu at some unexpected location. I can turn the camera off or navigate out. The worst was the manual mode. I could set the aperture with the lens and the shutter on the screen, but I had to go hunting to set the ISO. But I fixed that by programming ISO to a button. The placement of the video button is lousy and I am always turning that on by accident.
3. The quality overall seems to be good so far. I like the 18-55 kit lens. The images and color are pretty good. I love focus peaking. I am amazed at how well the Intelligent Auto works. I like the adjustable screen. I may have to spring for a viewfinder. I do have complaints about the top of the camera. There are three holes in the top and a cover for the hot shoe. The main function of these seems to be to funnel raindrops into the body.
I thank Sony for the e mount. I have an impressive collection of Rainbow and Fotodiox adapters. They work fine. It would be nice if Sony would make an NEX camera for photographers instead of the point-and-shoot/video crowd.
