Lightroom Tethered Shooting plugin

Agreed it needs firmware, however the "PC" connector I was talking about is the "Prontor-Compur" connector that is used to hardwire to a strobe in the studio. In the current range of cameras, the A77 is the only camera that has one.

Only my opinion. It's worth what you paid for it. Your mileage may vary! ;-}

Who wants to connect strobes with a wire anymore, radio triggers are the only way to go.

I get it. I was thinking PC=Personal Computer. My mistake. It seems that people are going more wireless these days but that's no reason to leave it out because I'm sure there are plenty of wired studio strobes still around.

Wow, call a whaaaambulance. I do not understand how stomping your feet and whining gets you anywhere.

I can take the hdmi cable to my 60 inch hdtv and use that as my viewfinder. Sure it's not directly sending the shot to my computer but I bet there are workarounds. Use it with a wi fi card perhaps. That way I can even use a projector tv, and do a presentation on photo composition for hundreds using an actual lightbox. Or sitting portraits.

Think about it.

Get 2 good lenses and an a77 and you'll have so much to do you will not sit up nights worried about this...

Toshiba FlashAir due out soon will obviate the tethering issues, it's going to be a bit slow but easier and potentially more reliable than EyeFi which I haven't bothered with as it's got too many issues and unreliability.

FTP server is the way to go with adhoc or local network. EyeSuck is not for me and experiences of A700 tethering were good but unreliable for event photography .

Sure there are workarounds but there is no reason Sony shouldn't implement such a simple feature when other manufacturers do have it. Also, for a professional portrait photographer time is money and tethering saves a lot of time. I used to think like you and thought whining did no good but after seeing Sony add missing features by firmware upgrade or subsequent cameras after complaints in this and other forums I actually think Sony responds so keep the complaints coming. No camera is perfect. Complaining about missing features is a lot more productive than complaining about high iso problems visible through pixel peeping.

Of course there are workarounds. That's not the issue here.

The issue is that a top camera doesn't have a feature that was there in earlier versions; a feature that all competitors have. A feature that's actually useful.

The first SLR I ever used was an old Oly (can't remember the model, it was a friend's). Full manual, even winding the film. No AF, a simple metering indicator, no "A" mode, no microadjust, no panorama mode :) And I used it. This doesn't mean that I'd go back to it.

Guys, I love my Sony. But more than that I love photography. Please, stop defending the company when it makes bad decisions. If we don't make demands, they will never listen to us. *

I hate to say this, but I think that the point of view of the product managers at Sony seems to be that of the point and shoot automatically photographer.
I think it is that of a Japanese electronics company and they tend to design every new product from the ground up each time rather than evolve the previous generation.

So instead of the A77 having all the A700 features and then all the new and useful ones it does have - it just got the features they dreamt up of when they sat down with a blank sheet of paper.

Marketing will have also had a say regarding development cost but I would hope there was not market segmentation at play here because tethering only on FF cameras would be a mistake as plenty people do not want or need FF.

Never used tethering myself as my A100 never had it so what you have never had you never miss but I can see why people would like it.

Yeah? Explain to me how ANY of those 'solutions' would help an event photographer looking to tether for immediate printing?

Just because YOUR needs are met with the current solutions doesn't mean that everyone's are. Ask your wife if you need a more tangible explanation. Sheesh.

If the supported 3rd party plugin was free I wouldn't have such an issue. Jeffrey Friedl (sp?) creates a ton of plugins that don't **** our pocket books. Heck
  • he just asks for donations. Is it truly a Sony issue? Regardless. I'll use the "watched folder" method before I give any of my hard earned (non-tethered) money to these DNA-KnuckleHeads. If anyone knows of a different plug in that's freeware or donation ware please share.

I agree that tethered shooting is totally lacking in the A77. I could really use it for portrait sittings. I've been using the EyeFi set up to an iPad but it's such a pain to work with. I need something that is dumb simple and reliable.

Whoever said that Sony maybe holding out for the A99 is spot on. I think they made a marketing decision on this one last year and they are not going to release anything until they sell some FF cameras...if ever.
