Fujifilm X-S1 now in stock at Amazon

Price $900, now $800

I really wonder what this camera has or offers more than an entry level dslr with say a Tamron 18-270mm (27mm - 405mm, for around $400) for roughly the same price. Is it better IQ? Better low light performance? Higher usable iso? Smaller/Lighter body or better future value?

When the body dies (it will at some point or you'll want something better), the value of your Tamron stays with you while the lens on the X-S1 joins the body on the scrap heap.

I'm just scratching my head as to how Fuji arrives at their recommended price in the first place and also (more so) about the reasoning of people that are prepared to buy it (at this price)?...

I have no dog in this fight. I love Fuji gear but this camera is not suitable for the kind of shooting I do. But if someone should love Fuji image rendition and want an easily carried camera with very wide range zoom, this could suit them quite well. It seems every manufacturer has a telltale look to their images. I have shot Nikon for years and have been happy with their raw output but never liked Nikon JPEGS. Canon color rendition has not been to my liking. But Fuji, for me, is magic. So camera choices need not be about technical tech comparisons. The image flavor can trump all else in my opinion.

Hi Sunshine_boy
For me it's:
  • more wide
  • more tele
  • macro possibilities
  • movie mode
  • live view (with tiltable screen) with fast AF
  • no dust
  • absolutely silent shutter
  • sharper lens
  • faster lens
  • cheaper
  • lighter
  • smaller

Interesting question. I wonder too. Fi: compare nikon D5100 with Tamron 18-270 and x-s1 at the same focal length. Say 400.
Which one comes out on top?

Shear pleasure of use? You mean the x-s1 pleasure of use? Orb problem. Blue orbflare problem. Smaller sensor. You name it, the x-s1 got all of those pleasures.

I would not prefer the tamron. Nor the nikon 18-200 for that matter. I'll give you that.

Often I get the impression that camera behaviour has nothing to do with facts. Love is blind. Problem is that Fuji also turned a blind eye on this one. And that is a pity because they can build camera's.

  • more wide
  • more tele
  • macro possibilities
  • movie mode ? [dslrs make movies too]
  • live view (with tiltable screen) with fast AF ? [ditto for dslrs too]
  • no dust ? [don't bet on it!.. Ever opened a bridge to clean its sensor?]
  • absolutely silent shutter [well. dslr can be just quiet...]
  • sharper lens ?
  • faster lens ?
  • cheaper ? [see comments below]
  • lighter
  • smaller ?
Image Quality [does it not count?]

Hi Bernie,
It is all a matter of opinion and personal feeling of course

but I doubt if you'll get your money's worth. I got the S6500 for around $250 and considered it worth it but $800! well, I don't know..

I put some question marks against what I doubt or have reservations about on your list.

And btw, when you feel that you want some better quality lens for special situations (say a 35mm 1.8 prime) what would you do? Buy an X100 I suppose?

And in 2-3 years time when you need to upgrade to newer technology (or your cam dies a natural death), what do you do? Wave goodbye to the whole package (including its lens) or prize its lens out for keeps?

I can understand a dslr owner spending around $400 on a bridge for the fun of it (if he can afford it). But for it being the only or main camera, I think it is an eventual waste of money. IMO of course...

I hope we see some of your fantastic winter scenery in Switzerland from any of your cams... :)

--Stop comparing. This Fuji is all about rest of mm from 400 to 624mm and if you get DSLR and need or like to shoot in that range good luck getting anything at $800.

If telephoto work is not in sombody cup of tea than getting budget DSLR with kit lens is way to go. I have now Nikon D700 did use D2Xs D70 D2Hs and have Fuji S5 and I do have a full range of lenses from 17mm to 400mm but getting above that is very very hard to a point that yes I will get Fuji Xs1 to see what I can do with it at locations I do my shooting. Will I use that Fuji for other stuff no but if somebody is just getting started and have no camera at all and was in nature bird watching and such there is no better camera for that type of users.

What was true several months ago is true no more. A better camera for a beginning birder that needs very long focal lengths is Nikon's J1/V1 with the FT1 lens adapter. It turns the relatively inexpensive 55-300mm VR into a 148.5-810mm lens. For higher cost but still nowhere near the extremely high prices of Nikon's "pro" lenses, the 300mm f/4 is considered to be the "budget" birder's lens, although a bit short. With the FT1 it becomes an 810mm f/4 lens and with Nikon's TC2 E-III, a 1,620mm f/8 lens. The FT1 is compatible with Nikon's VR lenses, but it requires AF-S compatibility in order to autofocus.

and if the rumored 18-300vr from nikon would have af-s this would certainly be an acceptable walkabout range.....= -50~810mm!!!

The 18-105mm VR would already make a nifty walkabout lens. Some people sure are greedy! :) Although I don't have a lot of experience using the FT1, it seems more than adequate without having to resort to using the TC2 with the 300mm lens. I think that settling for only 810mm isn't too bad but even then it would never be mistaken for a walkabout. For that, the HS10 does a good enough job although it's image quality is no match for the V1. I compared them with Kodak's 840mm Z990 and as expected it came in 3rd place, well behind the HS10. At least the Z990 is much less expensive and its colors are pretty good.

One example why you shouldn't rely on user reviews of a product.

"If you are interested in the shorter focal lengths, especially wide angle, you may like the camera. Exposures and controls were all good and really wanted to like the camera but .. I couldn't. My Panasonic FZ35 is far better at its long end. Even the Panasonic EZ mode is sharper than the Fuji at full extension."

FZ35 better than X-S1? LOL to that user...
