Nice pics!!

Can you tell me about the settings that you usually use with your G1X?

Thanks!

Thanks for sharing these pictures with us.
I find them very cool.
The colors look nice.

Good job Greg. The pictures are surprisingly crisp.

Tell us: did you find the camera pleasant to use or even difficult? Or are all those "Meh!" comments by reviewers a load of hogwash? You seem to be getting good results for pictures that weren't set up with controlled lighting. For walkabout shots, those where quite "punchy".

Cheers!

When I go out for the day, I choose one over another and seldom take both.

From what I see the S100 is a very capable camera.

P mode allows me to have most of the control I want.

Do not underestimate the full AUTO mode as I used it in some indoor images and it was amazing. The larger sensor holds up well even in the 800 ISO range.

The only additional thing I could ask is that the lens have the retractable cover!! I hate the lens caps that comes with the G1X as it is the pinch type and my fingers and hands are larger and it is not that easy to do. I prefer the cap release to be on the outside edges not inside on the front.

I like the controls and the layout. Other than the lens cap that I HATE, I find the controls to be well laid out. All are easy to find and the knobs got good dentents that prevent them from moving unless you want them to do so.

Only negatives are the lens cap and I do miss my 24 mm but the G1X is a pleasure to use.

Greg:

Could you please share your thoughts/experiences on the auto focus capabilities and the shot-to-shot speed times. These two things seem to pop up over and over in the reviews as weaknesses and cause some potential concern for me. Thanks.

People who think that when they pay $800+ for a P&S will get them DSLR focusing speed are not too bright!

The G1X does better than most and, in fact, does very well among it's competitors.

The image above, of my feet, I was able to focus on the wire cable in the foreground, on the first try. Past P&S would have been all over the place.

The G1X will NOT disapoint those who expectations are rooted in reality!

I have to agree that the G1X is capable and can't wait to see what people are able to do with it with more talent than me.

Greg, enjoy your new camera!

It is.

For most of your samples taken at lower ISO in outside light with the G1X, I don't see much of difference in image quality between the two cameras, at least when reduced in size like most of us process our images. But for shots I've seen taken at high ISO there is a big difference. I wonder if Servo AF works any better on the G1X than on the s100.

Still, the s100 performs admirably for a camera of it's size.

If I was going to spend $800 for a compact camera, it would have to have more of the auto focus speed and accuracy of a DSLR.

Hello Greg,

Thanks for sharing your pics.

I currently own a 5DIi but I am tired of lugging it around.

The only thing that prevents me to skip to the G1X is the shutter delay and the fps.

What is your experience in these boths fields ?

I have kids, and my main concern if I switch to the G1X is that I will miss a lot of shots.

Thanks for your kind reply.

these pictures seem to lack sharpness and contrast that may or may not be remedied in processing. That's not to say that they don't look good when considered against output of the G12/S100 sort of cameras.

The ovf would be the largest issue for me, lens cap aside.

I hate to be one of those "if only" people, but, if only they improved the ovf by giving a decent evf, and secondly, made it with an outstanding fixed lens like the X100(or interchangeable for that matter) it would be a better camera. As it is, it's a super-G12, and no more than that. That's not a bad thing for G12/S100 crowd.

Sorry but $800 will not buy DSLR focusing speed.

A "Super G12" is a pretty good comparison. I do think the improvements are worth the cost. Please do not let my lack of post processing take away from the camera. I really tried to keep it very close to what comes out of the camera. I compressed these very little and they total about 30-40MB.

I agree on the EVF, I love my EVF on the Nex7 but still find myself using the rear LCD in good conditions. As good as EVF can be they still lack a lot to me compared to a DSLR.

and if you want to do the kids a DSLR will always rule.

While the G1X is likely the fastest focusing non-DSLR I have used, $800 does not buy that kind of performance.

Right now no P&S performs as well as a full blown DSLR!!
