I have never pre-ordered a camera before, but I plan to do so with the Nikon D800

For those of you with experience of pre-ordering, which stores are good in the UK in terms of:
1. Don't take full money until dispatch
2. Easy to cancel if required
3. Tend to receive good stock compared to other stores

I would presume WEX or calumet would be up there

any other advice ?

thanks in advance

I have always been thrilled with Bristol Cameras. Great service, knowledgable guys. Good prices. I pre-ordered my Sony A77 from them and it arrived so quickly I was taken aback - as the rest of the world couldn't even get them.

I have used them many times, but that was my firt ever pre-order.

Best of luck, that new Nikon looks great.

No money up front (in my experience anyway).

D800 - free extra battery, and a whole £4.99 cheaper than WEX!

Good offer - need to either pop into store or phone them to reserve the D800 camera

Warehouse Express or Park cameras are good - however for some reason not offering any goodies like cards, bags, batteries, etc which is a shame as they're normally do in cameras between entry level, eg.., D3100 - semi pro Canon 7d, Nikon D300s, etc.

There would seem to be no need to offer incentives when the demand for the camera will probably exceed supply for some time, my pre order is approx half way down a list in excess of 100 so will I get one of the first batch ? Who knows, the dealer does not know at this point how many they will receive from Nikon but it is strictly on the order in which the pre orders were made which is fair. I would think that if you have not made a pre order by now you may be in for a wait.

Have always had good service from Warehouse Express (WEX) and they do not charge until delivery is made.

When ordering the D4 from Calumet i was told that Nikon Professionally members would get the first batch of cameras. Not sure if this is the same with the D800. Calumet have excellent after sales - I know a fellow photographer who was loaned a spare body when his D700 went back to Nikon free of charge. That swayed me to order via them.

I've also used Bristol cameras in the past and WEX and they have all had excellent serice - owe and also LCE.

I have used them before and find them excellent...Mathers of Lancashire are in Bolton.

Quick check reveals Calumet and WX @£2399, Bristol @£2395 with a spare batt and Mathers @ £2095.
All above are pre-order.

I would recommend them and I would imagine a small maybe £50 deposit would secure.

I saw that Mathers price the other day.

I'm a bit surprised that EVERYBODY else seems to be around the £2400 mark, but they are £300 cheaper. How come?

(and didn't I read somewhere that Nikon had told dealers to effectively not discount? or was this in the US? )

I'm not buying the D800 but if I were I would pre-order from Grays. I've dealt with them for years and a lot of money has gone their way :) It is great having continuity of the small group of people and they have supported me literally all over the world with a phone call or an email.

I am not sure of their pre-order payment policy but it is worth a call to find out. There will be nothing in the price between shops at this point :)

They got me a 300 2.8vr a few years back when there were none in the UK... some pull with Nikon ;) and they held a D3S for me for a month when they had people clamouring for them.. nice to build a relationship :)

Yep Vat is included but requires a £200 deposit to secure one - told price is going to stay like this and not move upwards towards the RRP.
