Best Christmas Baby/Children Shots ;-)

Billie, thanks so much for looking at my photos. It was so nice to get these compliments. I know what you mean about the kids running. My daughter has been a real stinker latley, giving me only those cheesey smiles. I am hoping she will outgrow this fast she was always so natural at this! She just likes to give me more of a challange. As if kids arent challenge enough :-) thanks again!

Unfortunately, my four children now run when they see mommy taking
out the camera to "experiment" with a new technique. Maybe I can
experiment on the neighbor's kids :-)

You obviously have a natural born talent and I hope you will become
a permanent fixture on this forum. There are many G2 and G3 fans
on this forum and you've inspired us all.

Kind regards
Billie

She is my insperation. Never
would have never started if it was not for her. she is very
photogenic and gave me the cofidence to do this. I am artistic in
other manners like paiting and crafty stuff but nothing that
special. Never took a class in my life. I am learning all as I
go....just dont tell my customers ha ha! thanks for all the
complements...you made me smile! My husband thinks that anyone can
take a photo and has no understanding of what i do. I have to say
had my first customer cry the other day. She was so happy that I
had captured her daughter she cried tears of joy. That was really
cool. I can say i really love doing this.
After looking at your photoalbum I was even more impressed.

As a father and a amatuer photographer I would have to say that
this is my favorite shot:

The value of a shot like that with my son would be priceless. I
think this is where the camera becomes less important and the
photographers eye and artistry becomes much more siginificant.

I am curious if you have always been artistic even before the
digital photography revolution. Your eye for scenes, color &
lighting definately looks like a talent you may have had for a
while.

Did you major in art or photography in school? I would like to
learn to get shot like these. Yet I know that this talent is
probably both a gift and something developed over time which much
effort involved as well.

Derek
Wow,

You definately are a talented photographer and artist. Your photos
are really awesome. Thank you for sharing your vision and work
here. I am sure your customers must be pleased.

I think the reason your equipment came into question was because of
the professional polish of your work. These kinds of studio photos
are not as common in 'This' forum as they are in the Canon SLR
forum where many studio/professional photographers display there
work.

I immediately think of two things when viewing these photos.

First, it reminds me of the saying it is not the camera that takes
the pictures but the photographer.

Second, it shows that the G-series cameras can really produce
studio quality work when in the right hands, using quality lighting
with good post processing techniques.

Keep up the good work and thanks for the inspiration!!!

Derek

Babybella,

Thanks for the tips... I will definately try them out next time I have a chance.

I read your reply to Bille about how difficult it can be to get your daughter to give you a smile when the camera is on... That is the challenge for me now as well. Last Christmas my son Luke just layed there and looked cute:

This year as a toddler he wants to move when seated in a particular place that is not of 'his' choosing ( like a pose next to the tree, or in a chair in front of a backdrop, etc... ).

So I have had to get creative myself and figure out ways to get him to sit still and be content, maybe even smile while I take a number of shots. Our son loves to watch certain children vidoes( ie- Baby Einstein, etc...). So I plug in a favorite video, sit him in a chair covered with a sheet ( I still need work on the backdrops ;-) and snap away while mom trys to get him to smile. Although somewhat crude we manager to wrangle the little guy long enough to get several decent shots.

The only light I use right now is the 420ex bounced and sometimes swiveled. I have considered buying some supplimental lighting for these types of indoor portrait shots.

What do you use or would recommend as a starting lamp/light to fill in some of the shadows beyond an attached flash? I am also considering purchasing the off camera cable to use with the 420ex. Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

Keep up the good work. It is refreshing to see someone doing what they enjoy. I was a little surprised you had no formal training, but a knew you had a giftedness for 'seeing' a potentially great shot. Your husband should be proud;-)

Thanks again,

Derek
Derek...thanks again. I have to say I only started digital
photography when I got my g2 about 7 months ago. I always liked to
take pictures. But didnt ever lean toward photograpgy untill I had
my daughter. Who is 3 this month

This is a cute shot...just move him away from the back drop so that
is is not so close to him.I have this problem a lot with kids...the
always scoot backwards as far as they can go..:-)And I am not sure
what type of light you used but if you lower it a little the small
bags under his eyes will not be as noticable. Very nice..he is a
cutie. Hope you dont mind I posted it. babybella

This is my favorite photo on your sight. How funny you should post it here. Could you give us some insight on how to accomplish this effect?

Thanks so much :-)

Wow! There are some great pictures in this thread. It is inspirational what one can do when they have the skill and talent. Truly amazing photography and, of course, the subjects are wonderful.

I used the program Photo Explosion deluxe I cut her out from the background and then tinted the background only, with some lenses options the program has. It only took a few min. I really like this program because of its ease of use, it cost around 100 bucks. But well worth it for me. I have print shop 6 but still am not very good at it. This Photo Explosion is made very simple anyone can use it with out training! Thanks amy ps. here is one with the sketch command

Thanks for the information, babybella. Unfortunately, I checked Nova's website for this product and although Photo Explosion Deluxe is now only $49.95, they don't have a Mac OS version. So, guess I'll have to make do with Photoshop.

I look forward to seeing more work from you on this forum. Thanks again :-)

yes, and my wife got one too Derek, so we're broke, but having a blast. Here's her shot this week. and below that is my ISO 50 RAW, neutral colors shot -- man we love these cams -- and I don't just say that...I'm a D30 shooter who has seen very high quality.

Mac,

Some good looking kids you have there ;-)
Was that a new ( expensive) toy for Christmas??

Very nice photos...

It is interesting that you had the D30 first. Most people go from the G-Series to the D-Series cameras. You went in reverse. I am hoping my next camera will be a D30 or D60.

That is why I am still using the G-1. For me a major upgrade would have to include much faster AF and decreased overall shutter lag. But I still get a lot of enjoyment out of the 'Ole G1' (1st generation - 1.5 years old) in the mean time.

Hello,

Last year we had some really cute Christmas shots of the children
of various contributors here.

I wanted to ask if anyone had some shots this year that they would
like to share.

Here are a few of my favorite shots of our 1.5 year old son. Last
year all he could do at 6 months was roll on the floor. This year
he is running and learning his alphabet( a moving target ):

Teski,

It looks like she got right into the spirit of things with little help;-)

Next year she will want to see what comes off the tree with a good tug.

Thanks for sharing,

Derek

Yup..She was into the paper once Mom put it in her hands, but I know next year will be different. I have an 18 month old niece and she was all over the place! :-)

Take care,

Dragon Spirit,

Wow, I really like that shot. Talk about capuring the moment...
Your child's facial expression is great- Surprise, its Christmas;-o

Good job with the flash also. Did you bounce it? Just curious. The lighting is really well balanced.

Hi Derek,

Thanks for the comments :)

Yep, its a 420EX bounced at 70 degrees off the ceiling. :) Love this flash! :) Although there's occasionally too much flash in some shots... I suspect this happens when there is a wall nearby, and some of the flash bounces off the ceiling and wall somultaneously, creating a little bit too much light.

Cheers,
DS

What I meant but not being able to link directly is that you can't post a link to your picture on pbase and have it appear in the body of the message. You will only see a link to the picture appear. If you try giving the direct link to the picture on pbase, it will show you the "direct linking not allowed" message. So the only way around this is to either post a link to your pictures, like I did, or else you a different, less sophisticated site to link to in your messages.

Cheers,
DS

Yes,

This usually works. Lets give it a try with Dragon Spirits great shot:

Also, I know what you mean about too much light. Some of my 420ex shots come out a little too bright. So I am experimenting with flash compensation which does seem to effect the output. Sometimes everything just comes together though like in your photo.

I read what you wrote in another other post about using a lot of batteries with the flash. I got the Maha rechargables for the 420 and they work great. The flash now outlast my Canon camera battery.

The 420ex sure makes a big difference. I was thinking of getting an interior photo lamp/umbrealla for portrait shots. Take a look at BabyBella's studio work. It is inspiring.

Keep shooting. Don't kids make a great subject.
