One of my favourite X100 images

I took this photo last summer at the Lost Gardens of Heligan in southern Cornwall. It was the interior of an old gardener's workshop.

I'm lucky enough to own an M9 which is full frame. One of the biggest advantages of full frame is the ability to crop quite heavily. The centre of this photo, with its colours and the light has always really appealed to me so I decided to crop the image and see how the Fuji stood up.

The answer - amazing really. The colours this camera produces takes my breath away sometimes. Really quite superb. And the way the camera has managed to hold onto the highlights is again something to behold. And all of this at ISO 3200!

If the X1 Pro can better the IQ of the X100 I can honestly see my M9 heading for Ebay. I never thought I would say that.

And now the crop

Has to be seen to be believed.
My FF Canon's can't do that, so the X-100 takes the job when it's in range.

I also like your choice of high ISO-value. It looks like film grain to me. Nice.

Thanks for showing, Steve.

The interesting thing is I followed Ken Rockwell's set-up advice when I bought the camera. In this instance the camera was set to auto ISO. Tough to argue with its choice!

Wow!

What metering mode were you using?
Centre weighted. Same as the M9. Nice and simple and easy to anticipate

Fan-tas-tic! Painting like! Was it OOC? If so, what mode besides manual, Velvia, Provia?

I loved the film-like colors and the grain @ ISO3200, holy moly! they too look like film! If I were you I would rather be shooting all the time high ISO! :)

Bob

THanks for sharing! It looks like a great example of 'creative over-exposure'.

I think it was Provia. I always shoot RAW. With this one I took quite a few exposures because of the very contrasty light and selected what I felt was the best image exposure-wise as a starting point. I then used some fill light and tweaked the exposure a little in Lightroom. Thats why I always shoot RAW. I think it also shows that the Fuji sensor has reasonable latitude without having to resort to HDR which I personally am not so keen on.

You are not wrong. The grain-like noise is lovely.

I spent a week in Cornwall last summer but unfortunately missed this spot (I was rambign around Penzance -> St. Ives -> Lands End)

Yes, with 12.4 Evs dynamic range and 22.9 bits of color depth (both better than the M9, BTW) HDR can be superfluous. This little camera has a distinct character :) in spite of being a digital and utilizing it masterfully may contribute to a personal style.
Two thumbs-up!

Great photo and I also love my X100 also. However, it is never going to replace my canon 5d full frame. The X100 wins in the exposure department but doesn't even come close to the 5d in image detail. I guess it depends on the job at hand.

Well done both artistically and technically

Very nice indeed, very good work.

Thanks everyone for the very kind comments.

Really nice picture that shows the quality the X100 can achieve even at high ISO.

But why did you shoot at ISO 3200 (and 1/500 sec)? This scene should have easily been handheld at 1/30 sec and therefore at ISO 200, shouldn't it?

No mean to bash your nice picture in any way, I'm just curious on your reasoning. Thanks.

No problem. The camera was set to auto ISO. I used 5.6 as a 'sweet spot' and I didn't want the possibility of any blurring
