I placed my pre-order of the D800 an hour or so after it was announced (and hours before B&H made pre-order available). I just got notification from Amazon about when to expect my camera:

"Nikon D800 36.3 MP CMOS FX-Format Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
Estimated arrival date: January 04, 2013 - January 08, 2013"

Oh... This does not look good! :-)

I got the same e-mail from Amazon on my D800 pre-order. Makes me have no faith for the D4 pre-order e-mails claiming delivery at the end of this week or beginning or next week either. Seem like arbitrary dates.

Amazon should stick to books, I have ordered loads of gear off them an never had a smooth ride, that's why I placed my D800 order with a very reputable dealer I used prior to finding Amazons slightly cheaper prices.

Every email I received was either predicting early or late delivery, so I wouldn't read much into them.

Tom

Yeah, I got the same message. I doubt seriously, it will take that long. There will come an update.

I got an email from them too. Ridiculous. I pre-order a few minutes before NikonRumors posted their link.

Mine says "Estimated Delivery Jan 2, 2013". Since I have Amazon Prime and selected "Next Day" shipment, I assume some clerk at Amazon simply punched in a shipping date of 12/31/12 for the first batch of D800's and the system generated all those emails. I'm sure they'll fix that as soon as they get an accurate date from Nikon.

I have to defend them. Living in a remote area I depend on internet shopping. I have bought hundreds of items off Amazon and had nothing but prompt and accurate service. Mind you, that's in the UK, maybe it's different elsewhere.

Just curious when you can get better service from BH, Adorama, etc.

I got a similar email, except my delivery window is 1/8/13 - 1/11/13.

Since I have two D4 cameras on pre-order (Berger Bros and Adorama), having the D800 not come until next January is fine with me. It will give me time to gather the extra money. My fear is that the will change the date and have the D800 show up before my D4.

Maybe you should look up the definition of "prediction".

Amazon doesn't sell/ship everything you buy off there. A lot of it isn't in their hands. Nor can they account for the delivering business, whether it be UPS, USPS, etc. If you assume that everything you buy from there comes from Amazon then you need to look closer. If you think Amazon can be exact on shipping dates when they are shipping thru a 3rd party... then you're just foolish.

I've been using Amazon for many years. Since they were ONLY books.

I have not one bad thing to say about them that is worth bringing up, just one choice they made recently in regard to a cancellation request I made, but I learned how to get around it now.

Same email. I should assume that maybe they know something. Why else they would risk to lose so much business – a lot people will cancel and go with pre-order with other companies.
Same email here. Not to worry as it's an error. Their first batch will ship in March as planned. dave

I received the same too...and I placed it within 10 minutes of the opening at like 1:00am, i was like WTF!!!

Glad we're all in the same boat...Amazon FAIL!

I ordered my D4 from Adorama, so let's see who updates when/what

I buy from Amazon all the time and not books. ;)

My most recent big dollar item was a Nikon 600mm VR lens. The first one I purchased was from BH, but was a poor copy and I returned it. Amazon had two day shipping for their U.S. Version at $4.99, for Prime members. Amazon also called me and asked how the lens was and if everything was fine with it. Amazon is reputable and excellent with returns never an issue.

cheers,

Ray

I have a D4 also on pre-order with Adorama. They originally told me it would be shipped on 1/27 and that was wrong. No update from them on D4 shipping dates.

I can pretty much be sure that the first few batches of D4 and D800 cameras to arrive at any dealers will only be there less than 24 hours before they are shipped out again to waiting customers. It will be a long time before any dealer has a "stock" of these cameras waiting on people to order.
