No offense, but none of these photos appear to be well focused on the animals. The SX40 can do MUCH better. Read the manual and learn to allow the camera to focus completely before pressing the button all the way.

I just read the manual and see that it says to half-press, wait, then full-press... but I don't understand why. Believe me, I know that the half press triggers the auto-focus and exposure algorithms and then locks in the values. I use this regularly to prefocus in preparation for a moving target, or focus then wait for the perfect moment, or focus then reframe the shot, or all the same for exposure... but if I want the shot ASAP then I full press and my camera (a Panasonic FZ15 at the moment) focuses then shoots. Does the SX40 not bother to focus if you don't pause at the half press? Or is it just a matter of users often forget to hold still until the shot or not taking care to make sure that the correct subject was identified for focus?

--I have gone from the SX10 on to the SX40 and apart from the few negatives the 40 just barely outdoes the 10 in IQ. The one thing that really does tick me off with the 40 is the half press to focus / exposure sensitivity. The half press is often too easily passed through which wasn't the case with the SX10. I can sympathies with anyone having trouble initially. However, it takes some getting used to and after a few hundred shots it almost seems normal.
