I have a strange feeling that D400...

... will have a bigger sensor than DX. Say 1.25 crop bigger. Subtle hints are the new Nikon patent for a lens with weird focal length range, an additional crop factor in D800, and naming convention changes (D@000 for all recent DX bodies).

I don't see them coming out with a new sensor size for that

I'm hoping for APS-C, anything up to 24MP and standard ISO of 200-6400 ..or 12800 ;-)

Not going to happen. I'd be shocked to the core.

And what is that weird focal length range? Why would a given focal length range be weird ? Because it does not fall in the ranges you are used to?

I'd be disappointed if it didn't have a base ISO of at least 100.

Agree +1, Sony only currently makes 1.0x FF and 1.5 for Aps, no business case for making anything outside this.

I'd expect any new sensor size to be to do with the Nikon 1 system of sensor based AF points.

D400 will be D7000 sensor +
D800/D4 focus module
D800/D4 video
8FPS
Improved algorithm for better noise than D5100/D7000

I highly doubt there is another sensor in Nikon, all bases are covered, nobody should be whining.

They have 4 sensors, don't think there is a 5th!

New D3100 sensor
New D7000/D5100/D400 sensor
New D800 Sensor
New D4 sensor

Following in the new Dxxx trend, I'd expect a 24mp.

I totally agree with you on this one

Nikon indicates that the D800 has 4 formats - FX, 1:2, 5:4 and DX. Maybe that's what those weird focal length lenses are for?

I think the specs for the D400 would fall closely to what has already been posted here. Only time will tell.

I don't see anyone whining, aside from people that are saying "this is enough pixels for me, so it should be for you".

Personally I don't see Nikon using a year and a half old sensor in their new "flagship" DX. With all the excitement over the D800's new high MP sensor, and all the talk of Sony's successful 24MP sensor. I think it would be a big disappointment to rehash the 16MP.

Plus, the rumors sites are suggesting it will be 24MP and they have an excellent track record.

I'm waiting to see, and it whatever they provide in a D400 will determine my next upgrade... whether it be a D400 or D800.
