Read the article 'The Nikon D800 is f#cked', it is fun! :) One thing sure about D800 is that color noise is evident in ISO 800 images. That may be the reason why the highest ISO of D800 sample photos in Nikon site was 640. ;)

Decision, decision, we are the slaves of decisions we made inadvertently.

May God forgive us our imperfections!

Dust to dust, what on earth are we entitled to claim?

I never saw this guy's site before, but I know Chuck Westfall's name from when he used to be on CompuServe. Yes, that was a LONG time ago. Anyway, this guy's website, is he for real? I can't believe he's so rah-rah for Canon. Canon should pay this guy because he's such a fanboy. My goodness.

But it is funny if you can just forget you are a Nikon owner. And all those noise comps with the !DX and D800 are for real.

I tried to point out this Rob Van Petten 800 ISO image had lots of noise in the dark blue sky, but was just told I shouldn't be looking at it on my monitor, or something like that:

There has been a few protagonists here who claim that once normalised the noise in any D800 image will be just fine, but I don't see it when I normalise the samples - they still look noisy to me - not bad mid you, but not anywhere as good as the D4 or 1DX for instance.

The worrying sign is that the 100 ISO images might need some more analysis.

Captains should find/see something positive even in extreme situations however desperate the circumstances may be. Surely Bligh was one of them and I find something meaningful in a trash which people call BS.

this shows up on my monitor as about 1350x900. that's 1/30th the size of an actual file from the D800. the noise is plain as day.

maybe it's underexposure noise, caused by brightening the image in post. maybe it's an extreme crop. but, since it's in the hands of a skilled photographer... i highly doubt it's either.

I don't think the D800 is TRYING to win any ISO competitions.

The D4 has that honor.

Try asking better questions....and you will get better answers.

Who cares about the high ISO capabilities of the D800? They are not horrable, but it isnt the high ISO machine ....but with my playing with even the simplistic .jpg files provided, I was able to extract very good color, and uprez to 40" x 60" like it was a cakewalk.

So let the nay sayers crow. I could care less. I know this will be exactly what I have been waiting for.

Now...the real Chuck Westfall would not say such garbage, but the fake one in that link....well I invite him to show up here in the Portland area, he can bring his 1DX, and I can take the D800.....and we can go shooting, and let the rubber meet the road. End result is the best 40" x 60" print from the outing...

So common Fake Chuck.....I double dog dare ya....

I might even bring my D300 to shoot along side the D800 just to make it interesting.

The comps of noise between the 1DX and the D800 are not BS tho. And he shows normalised comps as well.

Someone might mistake him for this joker :P

As for the 36MP D800 having noise at ISO 800, that's a surprise! ;)

Did you look at the ISO 100 image noise and banding he showed?
The D4 has that honor.
That's true.

Sorry, what was the question? There wasn't any question. All there was was a link to this Fake Chuck Westfall page, which has some interesting image comps.

He shows 100 ISO and 320 ISO noise as well - that's not high ISO.

Well I'm not drinking any orange aid personally The D800 will prove itself in time, after many people have use of it, not just the Nikkorati. I hope it knocks the socks off all the competition. Let's see. No point in slamming the likes of Fake Chuck Westfall when he is showing some interesting issues with D800 files.

No one pointing out the complete flaw with all of this. He is bragging about the 1dx being far batter then the D800. One of these cameras is canons top of the line DSLR at nearly 7k and the other is Nikons prosumer FF DSLR at 3k.
If this is a debate canon has issues

Well price is irrelevant to the technical debate. I’m interested in whether this 36MP will be useful, whether Nikon has made a good call with the sensor being so hi-res. I hope they have.

Remember the D700 had the D3 sensor, but at a fraction of the D3 cost. Nikon could have just put the D4 sensor in the D800. Many people are wishing they had done this. What we got was a sensor with 1.5 times the linear resolution (7360/4928), but at what cost in terms of noise? We will find out over time as more people use this camera.

Have you done your own tests or are you basing your worries off this article? Can you really trust anything this person says? I hope you are atleast worrying about your own findings

Sure. The 100 ISO image that he shows the banding in is on the Nikon website (sample image 1 - Bibliothèque nationale de France). If you look around in the arches of the Library building you can see the banding. Don’t have to trust fake Chuck.

I any event, I’m certainly not going to base my purchase on Chuck’s musings, but only on corroborated evidence over time. This is just one more data point to assimilate ;-).

Having said all that I’ll probably buy it anyway, because I need a replacement for my D700, and Nikon didn’t give me a choice of the D4 sensor in a D800 body.

Steve, for whatever reason, ever post James makes is to bash D800. It's been going on for a few months now.

As for the linked article itself, Fake Chuck had better days. He used to be genuinely funny.

Based on the EXIF info, both ISO 800 images (1DX sprinter, D800 flower) appear to be OOC JPEGs, although I can't be certain for the 1DX image because the EXIF looks different than I'm used to. The 1DX has both chrominance and luminance noise-reduction enabled and set to "5", which differs from the usual High ISO NR EXIF field reported by Canon, and I don't know what the scale is (DPP's scale is 0-20 so maybe it matches that). The D800 image has High ISO NR disabled.
