If the D4 and D800 price is the same ($3k), what would you buy?

Two D4.

D4 of course....

If I could get only one I'd get the D800E for my landscapes and cry I couldn't get the D4 also... I think.. would be tough...

If I wasn't so focussed (pardon the pun) on natural landscapes and wanted a more alrounder then it'd be the D4 no probs. The D4 will do amazing landscapes of course... so it would be tough.. and things like star-trails and other nighttime stuff it'd be the best available.

If I could only have one it would absolutely be the D4. Here's why:

- Full body (I really need a vertical shutter button, I don't have a bad back so weight doesn't bother me ;) )
- Better quality high ISO noise (to be seen)

- Better weather sealing and durability (My D300 froze up several times in the winter side by side with my D3 that never froze up)

- 400000 actuation shutter rating (I am a full time photographer who uses my camera tons)

- Megapixels the D3 is my daily shooter. The D4 will become my daily shooter and I DO NOT want a 36mp daily shooter. No normal client ever asks for 30x48" prints other than when I do helicopter landscapes and for that I will also buy the D800

- Faster memory cards (XQD means writing to be faster. This saves me a LOT of processing time.
-Illuminated buttons (not a deal breaker but useful during concerts etc)

The D4, and I'm not even much of an event shooter. It's just that 16mp happens to be enough for me (in fact, I just had a designer contact me today and he only requested 12+ mp), and I do like the integrated vertical grip and more solid feel of the D + single digit bodies.

I also think the D4 would be better for video because of it's clean high ISO performance and additional 2.7x cropping mode. This is important to me as I am making video a big focus this year and heavily investing in it.

That is like saying:

If a 2012 Mercedes Benz and a 2012 Lamborghini are listed at the same price, which do you buy???

The responses in this thread make it seem that the D4 is the obvious choice--and it probably is for most. But, would the responses be the same if we ask this question a year ago and compared the D3s with the D3x? I suspect that many would choose the D3x (and would be partly influenced the price tag), despite the D800 potentially matching up well against the D3x.

Thank you very much for your responses. This is not a scientific (not statistically significant) but very interesting research.

Let's continue it and maybe we will be able to formulate a certain conclusion. Please answer this question: What would you buy the D800 or D801 exactly the same as D800 in every aspect, including price, except:
resolution - 16 MP
high ISO almost as D4 and
9 fps?

D4. Not even close for me. Now, if the D800 had the same sensor as the D4...

D800 might be better in DR, IQ however it is not on par with D3x in term of handling, problem with D3x is always it price, and I'm glad to see Nikon goes the way as Canon to launch an affordable high MP mid range DSLR, and D800 definitely will be the best selling FX DSLR for Nikon in years to come.

Naturally I would buy both at 3K each. BUT if I could only choose one, then I gotta go D800E, because I want to experience 36 MP with nothing between my eye and the finished image.

D4 with 16MP, not enough for "the experience"

Let's face it 36MP is HUGE.

The D4 samples were great, but the D880E samples are even better. Not knocking the D4. It's going to be a great camera, but to experience the power of all those MP is something I need to do.

Neither, I like my d3s. Put 16-18mp in a professional bodied cropped camera with quality high ISO results and I would buy it for my bird photography.
