Does anyone have action shots they can post. I saw the basketball game ones and the beautiful seagulls and would really like to see more.

I just purchased the G3 and would like to see what it can do in action situations.

I will be shooting horses jumping. I would not be panning (unless that is the best way to do it) the horse but focusing on a particular jump and waiting for the horse to come. I will know before hand where the horse is going so can wait for the horse to come to me (at the jump).
I am a complete ignoramus about cameras so please be kind.
ANY info, comments appreciated.
thanks

Here's one of a collection you may enjoy.

But here's a secret... it was actually taken with the G1! I can't wait until next years Blue Angel show to use my G3.

This one is actually my favorite.

Another secret... it wasn't using the max resolution.

They were taken in P mode, with the multi-shot button pressed so I could get as many shots in a row as possible.

You might have seen my Basketball pics.

In daylight you should be fine. main thing is watch your histogram. try to shoot ISO 50 in daytime. Set mode to shutter priorty TV = 1/500. Set burst mode where when you hold down the shutter, it atkes mutiple shots about every second or so. Check your histogram, if it is too much light, increase ss til the histogram looks right, if it is too little light, increas the ISO until the histogram is normal curve shape. The apeture will set automatically in TV mode. Ok, now you are shooting in the venue and you need to know what ss and apeture the cam is using to get the best shots for the light that is there. Once you know this, switch to manual mode and make the settings the best that TV mode was able to achieve. Manual mode will give you the most consistent shots -- once you find the right ss and AV formula. Enjoy!

Thank you very much both of you for the photos and the tips.
I am going to study and practice as much as possible.

Please, I'd love to see what the G3 can do.
(yes, a shameless bump)
thanks

The G3 is a great camera, but is not the best choice of camera for action photography. I don’t expect you will get that many samples. I have a G1 and have done some action work with it, but when it comes to action I prefer my Fuji S602 to take photos like this:

Hi Babs, I'm brand new to digital. Love my G3 though the slow focus takes some getting used to compared to my old EOS. I already snapped and discarded many too-late shots. I'm getting better with practice, but for kid shots (man they move around a lot!) especially in low light I'm back to using film for the time being. I posted a couple photos of my dog at:
http://www.pbase.com/rickpollak
They're under "action photos"
All best,
Rick

Thanks Rick
Your dog looks more like a bear! ;)
I guess I will just practice, practice, practice with the G3.

I plan on shooting horses jumping and since I will know where they are going I can focus in on the jump and hopefully get some decent shots.

I also have a Canon eos 650 to shoot with....but am going to start with the digital since I can delete the bad shots.

I know you want g3 pics but I only had my s30 back in August of this year during the mosport lemans race. Hope these s30 "action" shots are too your liking :-)

Due to limited zoom they're cropped from the originals but not resampled. Some minor corrections in photoshop. This years lemans race at mosport will be much better now that I got my G3 and the optional 1.7x tele converter ready to go :-)

It was funny, last year almost every other person with a digicam I saw snapping pics had a canon g2 hehehe. Time to continue the canon tradition

Hi

could you tell me why G3 is not good for taking action pics? Also could you tell me how much better the fuji is in that regard.

Thanks

Thank you Andj for the pics.

Since you will be using the G3 for action shots do you find it acceptable? I am hearing negative tihnsg about it for action and am concerned.
My camera arrives today so I guess I will find out soon enough.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but when you are shooting the cars are you panning them?
thanks

I have no doubts the G3 will be vastly superior for action shots then the s30, especially at full zoom. At full zoom on the s30 the aperature is limited to 4.9 which results in a comparatively very slow shutter speed for action shots even in bright sunlight. The g3 in comparison can do it about 1.5 stops better.

So a shot that is well exposed at the noise-free iso 50 on the s30 would take about 1/250s shutter speed to come out right in bright sunlight at full zoom. The G3 could get similar exposure most likely at about 1/500s to 1/750s and at greater zoom to boot. The add on teleconverter lens likely effects light input somewhat so I'm guessing at full 7x optical zoom I'd be able to take clear, frame filling shots at a motion stopping 1/500th of a second. Sweet. I can't wait for the motorsports season to start here in Toronto so I can put all my new toys to work :-)

The shots above where done with manual settings. Took a few practice shots to get a pretty good shutter speed and aperature value and then manually focused to where I decided I'd get a full 3/4 view of the front of the cars as they zoomed by. Then, as the cars would drive around the corner, I'd start panning the camera and click when I thought it was right. Managed to get about 1/3rd of my shots as keepers with decent sharpness, exposure, and framing. I don't think auto modes would work well for cars travelling in access of 150mph.

Santo, the G3 is about average for a digicam when it comes to autofocus and autoexposure. This results in significant shutter lag. The largest part of this lag is when you first ½ press the shutter. Once the G3 locks its focus and exposure it is extremely fast when you press the shutter. This is the trick to taking action photos with the G3. ISO 400 or the G3 is a nice improvement over its predecessors, but is still kind of noisy. When you take action photos, it helps to be able to use a fast shutter speed and the faster ISO helps. The G3 has a 150mm equivalent lens, which is long and helps to get you some working room for action shots.

The S602 is extremely fast when you ½ press the shutter. ISO 400 on the S602 is fairly clean, but there is still noise visible. The S602 has a 210mm equivalent lens, which gives you a little more working room. The S602 also has a wonderful feature called last 5 frame burst mode which allow you to shoot up to 25 frames in 0.2 seconds sequence and when you lift your finger off the shutter release the last 5 frames are saved. This is fabulous when you know that something is about to happen but don’t know exactly when. I wish I could adjust the space between the shots, but it is still fabulous. The eagle takeoff was captured with last 5-frame burst.

The G3 is a fabulous camera and I enjoyed shooting with it when I tried one out. If you want to do lots of action photography, a DSLR is the best solution, but even they suffer from some autofocus lag.

Thank you very much morris.

I have just ordered the G3 and awaiting delivery at the moment. I don't plan to do alot of action photos, but when I do I keep you advise in mind. I am sure it will be a usefull trick.

Thanks again.
