Be careful for what you dreamed of...... a 45mm GRD4 is out (well almost)

well, you all know what's troubling with that announcement: "all the earth-shattering performance of sd1.."

i rather have their old sensor in a better performing body...probably the most unreliable point and shoot ever made.
I heard some GRD users say that a longer than 28mm is all they wanted..... You know what, an APS-C sized GRD4 will be here....... with too many pixels to count!

unfortunately 45mm is closer to 50mm than the 41mm
I have no idea why Sigma changed that

also let s not forget that the sigma dp is 3;2 ratio only ( big flaw) while the grd4 is 4;3 and offers many others
for those , like me , who do not like the 3;2 ratio it is a BIG difference

i base it on what I've read. -no never used one...maybe i should have been clear about that: but the DPx threads here and elsewhere were always about how good the IQ was but also the sluggish operation speed, terrible lcd screen, bad battery life, slow and unreliable AF etc.

(most of the forum discussions go around recycled material, unfortunately..so yes, i should have been clear about never having used one.)

having said that, i would very much value your comparison of grdX vs dpX: as a user of both cameras how would you compare the user interface, speed of use etc.)

thanks

I wonder on what you base this rather strong statement . I have both and I can tell you that this has not been my experience
did you own a DP and if yes for how long and what model ?

p.s ...and also (more than often mentioned--by others, again) camera freezes. were they able to address that with a firmware update??

i wish they changed 28 to 35...it also makes more sense when they get rid of the 40. i agree that 40 would have been fine next to 28.
28-40
35-50

these make better pair (in my opinion, of course...and this one is based on my experience-not what i've read somewhere)

I had the 28 and the 41 (the former was stolen, and I still use the latter at times). I had a DP2 from the original batch, which suffered from a mangneta cast. Sigma exchanged it for another one, and I have had no problems since. Write times are slow, and the battery life is poor, but the files are great. If they put out a .35mm I would certainly get it.

It's about time they were updated and using the new sensor was a good idea. If the (camera) performance is there these could be great cameras! I suppose we can look to the SD1 images as examples of IQ. Too bad there is no EVF, but I understand why.

The choice of 45mm seems odd.

I let me DP cameras go last year. I doubt I'll get another one, but I'll keep an eye on these. With the typical time lag between Sigma announcements and actual releases I have plenty of time to wait!

now just jam it in a gxr unit! seriously that would be awsome. I have a DP1, the foveon takes nice looking pictures the camera is just toooo sllllooooow, and not just the f4, the new ones look really promising and the 28 has moved up to f2.8, hope to get a chance to try it out

If only Ricoh had bought the Fevron sensor. Sigma don't seem willing to change the ergonomics of the base camera unit. It still looks a bit under designed, a bit like a prototype.

Just imagine a GRD iv with the fevron sensor. My dream compact.

That would be a dream - a Foveon sensor in a Ricoh body! I have the SD14 and it is one of the most unreliable cameras I've ever had. In good light, when it works, it produces stunning images. Usually several lock-ups and other bizarre problems happen before any images are shot. The DP2 I purchased was dead out of the box - it simply refused to recognize any SD cards. Sigma replaced it with a refurb (wasn't too happy with that) but that seems to work. It is primitive from a usability/ergonomics perspective. As one of my friends said once - "The mechanic at the corner store could make a more reliable camera than Sigma", after he got rid of his DP1.

Too bad they screw things up, in this day and age. It isn’t like the technology is rocket science or anything like that. Waste of the ip they bought when they acquired Foveon. Wish someone else other than Sigma has bought them.

Cheers,
-raaj
