First of all sorry for the exceptionally confusing subject...

I've just taken delivery of my new GX1 with the 14-42mm X and I have a Panasonic 20mm on it's way too - I know this is such a typical setup... But it works!

So... I've moved to M43 from full frame DSLR (5d/7d) and I'm unsure of the regular practice with protecting the glass.

Does everyone use a UV on their M43 lenses? If so, what do you use? I ordered a tiffen but I'm really unhappy with the quality and it's going back tomorrow. Hoya don't seem to do anything that will fit...

So what UV protectors do you use on your M43 lenses?

Many thanks,
John

B+W UV filters.

John,

Why put lower grade glass over "nano-surface coating" of the X-lens? Good filter cost more than some of my lenses. I don't use UV or MC protector, as it degrade the image quality and increase flares and ghosting. That's my choice.

For protection, brought the panasonic leather camera case that shape fit both the X14-42 and the 20mm. It was cheaper than one B&W filter, that give me protection for both my camera and lens + more grip.

Never use a filter but always use lens hoods and lens caps. There are excellent 46mm hoods available for the 20...I have both metal and collapsing rubber. The hoods keep extraneous light from striking the front element and also protect the glass.

I agree. Use a lens hood ALWAYS. Nice lens hoods available on ebay and very inexpensive.

I purchased a B+W 67mm UV MRC filter for my 100-300mm lens due to the environment I knew I'd be using it in -- safari in Kenya. Dust, dust, and more dust -- and getting banged about in a Landrover.

I'd rather clean a filter repeatedly than the lens. Optically I think it worked out rather well.

I also have the 20mm pancake but I did not buy a UV filter for it as I knew I would not be using it on game drives.

+1

Right... So no filter then. I did feel quite stupid holding such a tiny filter.

With the fold out hoods, do they add much size to the lens, as I'm going to be storing it in one of these ever ready type cases.

Any recommendations?
