I recently purchased PSPX4 and was so impressed with Nik Color Efex 3 that I bought the newer Efex 4. I cannot get it to work with PSPX4. I either get the message "Plugin caused an acccess violation" or occasionally Efex 4 will open so that I can see the various effects but when I try to save the changes the program freezes and I have to use Windows Task manager to close it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

PS: To check that the Efex Pro 4 is OK I downloaded a trial verion of CS5 and it works perfectly. Unfortunately I cannot afford to buy CS5.

The best I can tell from the Nik website and the Corel PSP users forum is that unlike version 3, version 4 isn't compatible with PSP, just the software listed on Nik's website. A shame.

However, Topaz Lens Effects is listed as being compatible, though not quite as good a program (nor as expensive) as Nik.

Topaz lens effects is very good, especially the depth map! I have several topaz labs and NIK filters but i can't say one is clearly superieur over the other. It depends how you use it!

Perhaps a bit inconvenient, but you can drop a copy of an original image on the Color Efex Pro 4 shortcut and use it like that.

Doesn't this only work for the standalone version?! Plug-in versions need a host, like photoshop or another host application.

Thanks to all who have replied.

I was especially interested to hear of Topaz. I now have a 30 day trial of both Topaz Effects 5 and Topaz Lens Effects. Playing with these is helping me get over the fact that Efex Pro 4 will not work with PSPX4 :-)

I created a shortcut on the desktop that points to the Color Efex Pro 4.exe file located as shown below. The standard .8bf plugin is located there as well. When I drop an image on the shortcut, CEP4 opens with the image.

"C:\Program Files\Nik Software\Color Efex Pro 4\Color Efex Pro 4.exe"

I am not aware of any either plugin or standalone versions. Mine does both; CE5, LR and standalone. I believe they are all like that, but no doubt can be mistaken. My earlier CEP3 and Viveza2 worked the same as well.

The version that came included with PSPX4 is different. It strictly is a 32 bit plugin; there is no .exe file and it possibly only works with PSPX4.

David,

Don't give up on CEP4. All Nik plugins can be run in stand-alone mode.

I didn't see what computer system you're running but here's how it works in Win7. Go to this path:

C:\Program Files\Nik Software\Color Efex Pro 4

Find the Color Efex Pro 4 application, right-click and Send To Desktop (Create Shortcut). Now, you can drag an image to that shortcut or double-click to open the application.

CEP4 is a major upgrade over CEP3. You'll love it.

I had a look in the folder, but you are reffering to the standalone version, the 8bf version is the plug-in version for photoshop.

So, if you drop an image on the shortcut, you open the stand alone version, not the photoshop plug-in!

Thanks to your inspiration I didn't give up :-)

It works! I pasted a TIFF image onto Desktop and then right clicked and chose Open with. I browsed to Efex Pro 4 plugin and Nik program opened. I was able to save changes made by Nik and then clicked on saved TIFF which then opened in PSPX4. Slightly cumbersome but I am very happy.

Thanks to all who chimed in.
