...but worth going out for a few shots !

We're just having again a conjunction of very low temperature (-12 C. 10 F.) with strong northerly winds, which gives a "comfort level of (-20 C. / -4 F.)...

Sooooo.... I went to the lakeside to see what was going on ;) !

As usual, the EXIF datas are embedded in the images. To see the 1200x800 originally uploaded, click within the images !

They really are fantastic shots!!

In fact, this happen every so often, but not every winte, hopefully for the cars owners and unfortunately for us photographers !

The last HARDEST ice storm we had was in january 2005, when I spent 3 days out in the cold, shooting away ! At the time, there weren't as many "photographers" as yesterday ! I guess most people interested in this had seen a few of my images and took the opportunity to give it a go ! ...and the radios and TV warned us a few days in advance, so everybody was "ready" ! ...except the poor TOURISTS who left their cars parked on the lakeside !

IMO, they will have to wait a WEEK -at least- before to be able to retrieve their cars !

That's wild stuff!

Amazing bet those cars will need a bit of deicer to get going...lol...

How safe is it walking in those conditions, especially the ice ?

very nice shoots :-)

also very cold her in Denmark (-23) but no wind, so less spectacular ice formations

The only way is to WAIT until the ice melts... then, normally, the car should start without any problem !

Very safe, as long as you stay on your feet !

...With such a sleek ice, winter shoes are useless to avoid "sliding" ! To be REALLY secure, one should use "spiked shoes" ! ...but, walking slowly and carefully also works: I didn't even fall once (this time !) :D !

Wow, nice shots, amazing and surreal !

Think of those poor car owners, trying to explain to their boss why they are late for work on monday. Well, you've provided them with excellent proof!

I went out yesterday to take some sunny snow pictures in the Netherlands, but they are 'less spectacular' to say the least...

Kind regards,
Johan

Didn't you have strong winds in Ouchy yesterday ? ...maybe the geographic situation of Versoix "priviliegiates" (!) it when the north-north-east winds blows ! In any case, there are ALLWAYS more ice -and sunk boats- in Versoix than in Geneva !

Mind you, today the wind has almost stopped... I planned to go back to the lakeside, but I eventually didn't, because I'm sure there must be a HUGE CROWD, and all the nice stalactites will be knocked down by the kids...

Can't speak for yesterday, I was in Gstaad for a snowboard freestyle competition (as photographer, not snowboarder). But it does really look like you have higher "chances" for such conditions.

I wanted to go this afternoon, but despite having to sort and process the photos from yesterday, but I feared the crowd as well.

We had an ice storm here about 15 years ago, and the extra weight it puts on trees and just about everything can be devastating. I realize this is caused by the lake, but it is very similar. Great shots. How did the D700 hold up in that cold wind? Dave
