The k5 body is great, the only physical addition it needs is a dedicated (or assignable) video record button.

Keep the same body and control layout, add a video button that can instantly record video from any camera mode while retaining that modes exposure settings.

Upgrade sensor, processor, improve sensitivity and dynamic range, add full manual control in video, add effective focus peaking and a liveview mode that keeps the mirror raised fulltime, raise sync speed.

If you can squeeze full frame into a k5 body do it!

I am wholly satisfied with the body design of the k7/k5, please retain it for the next few dslr generations of semi-pro pentax body, at least until their is a compelling design reason to change :-)

I feel the same way. I think some minor tweeks are neccessary though.
1) IF they get better video then take the video option of the mode dial
2) Better autofocus
3) Lot more uses of the raw/fx button

4) when changing autofocus points not having to hold the OK button down for 3 seconds (1 sec is prob. enough)

These are all minor tweaks but i really hope they keep the main body the same

Ricoh have gadget slap stick approach to camera design. You will be lucky if you get anything as svelte and pretty as the k5. K-01 is more the essence of Ricoh design philosophy. Get used to it. AND no, Japanese companies do not listEN to their market. Believe it or not.

Get a clue will you! Ricoh GRD is basically the same design four times running, if anything it's the porche 911 of the compact camera world. Not only that, they are also widely praised for their functionality when it comes to menu system. I see two very similar approaches to design and function between the companies. And the likleyhood the k-01 is a Hoya approved as well.

wouldn't hurt if they got rid of the puzzling bump next to the lens mount.

The first thing to be changed is to remove the mode dial and replace it with an e-dial for aperture control on the that side of the camera. Since the camera no longer has a mode dial, change the e-dials to clickable e-dials like on the wheel on a mouse. The idea will be each setting; ISO, shutter speed, and aperture, can be set to auto mode, and out of auto mode, by clicking on the representative e-dial. By setting an individual setting to auto you can have TAv, mode. By setting two settings to auto, you get Av, Tv, and Sv, modes. All three set to auto would give you Green mode. Hyper manual mode would be expanded, as you can click on and then off each auto mode to have either shutter speed, aperture, or ISO shifted accordingly to the other two settings. You will need a dedicated video button, and an option to set P mode to the raw button, or just as a menu option in the shooting menu.

You can lose the Green button as when the EV compensation button is pressed, you will still set it with the rear dial, or zero it out by clicking the e-dial. This will give you room for the needed video record button.

The rear e-dial on the right, will also be like a modern mouse wheel in that it will rotate, have center click, and have up and down selections (horizontal scroll on the mouse wheel). This will be used for all menu navigation. The pad probably can then be replaced with just dedicated buttons

Put a C HDMI compatable port under the OVF , just above the back LCD, for an external LCD or an external EVF attachment port. Have the port be able to accept remote setting control of shutter speed, ISO, and aperture, as well as being able to trip the shutter, from the external LCD. The idea that if you have the LCD in your hand on a long tether, you will only need one cable between it and the camera.

Thank you
Russell

Thanks Russell for bringing up the other side. The K-5, while it was better than the K-7 and everything before it, is still far from perfect. Just try it with gloves on and you'll get the idea.

I hope Pentax make a metal silver version available from the beginning and not as an incredibly limited edition.

I really wanted a silver K5, but by the time I had the spare cash they had all gone.

I yearn for a digital Pentax ME really. A silver metal K5 successor will do nicely.

If not, I will be looking at silver metal Oly OM=D with envy !

I have no problems at all using it with outdoor gloves - vaude softshell with leather palm

of course I am not going to even try to operate it with proper primaloft gloves...

I do believe that Japanese companies, especially Pentax, don't listen to their uer feedback.

I do love the K-5/7 camera body. Enough to own one K-7 and two K-5 camera bodies. Still I can see some improvements.

From the interview with the Pentax R&D guy I will expect slightly smaller dslr bodies with even better viewfinders. I don't know how they will do that. One thing might be an hydbrid optical/digital viewfinder using the just announced Samsung transparent OLED or using the patent that Pentax as for one.

I do expect to see a mirrored version of the K-01 for the K-r replacement. For the K-5 replacement/upgrade I don't have any ideas except for the hydbrid viewfinder.

I see several members stating that the Japanese manufacturers do not listen.

Probable true -- but I ask you to try to "listen" to the voices on this and the other forum. We attack, we praise, we suggest, we are difficult to hear.
This thread begins to do the right thing -- it asks K5 users to comment.
But it comes in with a view -- keep the K5 body intact.

I would like to see a thread like the flower of the month post -- a new K5 issue of the month thread .

It could address overall functioality (e.g., better performance in poor light, more frames per second, etc), it could address new features (EVF), it could address the layout of the camera (where the dials are located, what they do), etc.

A senior member of this forum would need to take the lead -- someone with name recognition. I HOPE ONE OF YOU WILL TAKE ON THE TASK.
