Leaked full pics of OMD front back and added grip.

Interesting I can not remember a single person who slammed the E-PL3 or the M for not resembling a film series PEN camera. Yet these weird, illogical, probably knee-jerk, criticisms that a camera that is actually labelled "OM" and follows an clearly OM-like design is slammed for not looking like a PEN!

Doh - what did you expect?

The PEN line up obviously has a design philosiphy to be very clean compact "RF-like" form factor like the original PENs. The OM line was obviously SLR and so the OM-D form follows that philosiphy.

Instead of spouting illogical justifications why don't you just say you dont like it?

Why is there a fake lens photoshopped onto those pics?

Makes me doubt their veracity......

Hmm,. logo looks MFT, text looks four-thirds...

It only seems to have only one line of text so it should be 4/3
But the last letter looks like a big O letter, which suggest it is m4/3.

Is there such a thing as m4/3 logo with only one line of text. I wound only one in Olympus website

Beside all of this there's no proof that this photo is even authentic.
So who knows... we'll just have to wait untill the wensday 2012.02.08.

Not everyone needs f1.7 and stopped down the current 17 is a very nice little lens. Bokeh and flare characteristics are more pleasing than the 20 IMO. The 20 is still generally a better lens, but was twice as much money when I bought mine and I was planning on using it at f5.6 so not really worth it.
Side note: Isn't about time that Olympus introduced an update for the 17 2.8? Or a faster, better pancake? To see a brand spanking new camera, with the somewhat uninspiring 17 2.8 mounted on it is a bit odd, no? Even the PEN cameras would benefit from a better, wider aperture pancake, and it must burn Olympus to see all those 20 1.7s mounted on their bodies. Not rip on Olympus day, as I love their lenses, and own the 45 1.8, but I've been wondering about this for a while.

Now, if the name "EM-5" is official, what about the "M" in it?
It could have been E-5 then...

Hi Brian

What website did you find the silver pic haven't seen that pic before only in black.
The copyright stamp ends with rumors, what is the first bit?
Cheers

Now... if Olympus will bring a weather sealed 17mm f1.4 my dreams will be answered!

You know what?

On my E-P2, under the logo, it's only written "MICRO". I guess it is the same with E-M5.

The more I look at it the more it looks word Micro. Also my initial acknowledge was that there isn't such a thing as one liner m4/3 logo. But I was wrong, as the logo specification tells us.

the olympus pyramid will flip up to reveal a flash. there are visible seams in both images, front and back. the logo under the hotshoe in the rear image looks like the AP2 logo on my EPL2 - the symbol for the new electronic generation of hotshoes on the Pen cameras. the port's probably hidden behind that flat surface above the viewfinder.

Yep, and that's probably same kind of logo.

the pyramid is completely detachable. fly without flash and hotshoe for a low profile but keep the EVF... very NEX-7

What a beauty............a sort of Jean Shrimpton of the m4/3 world {classy and stylish}.

Having just sold my gh2, i am eager to see if the specs and handling make this a realistic back-up choice for my dslr {or replace it, in most areas}.

Spot on. I'm stunned people are not seeing this. The flat bit above the eye cup is probably nothing more than the blanking plate for the AP2 port.

The packaging of the 3 features, EVF, Flash, Hotshoe with accessory port, appear to have been vertically stacked. Hence the higher hump. Notice how flush the plastic/metal part inside the eyecup is with the screen. Its only the rubber eyecup surround that protrudes.

I prefer this way more than the packaging of those features on the G3 (which is overall about the same size as this camera). The G3 puts these features one behind the other resulting in the EVF jutting out by over a centimetre at the back, which is the definition of fugly (plus means it wont fit in a coat pocket even with the 14mm lens on).

If these pics are accurate, this camera is a fantastic bit of packaging (about the same size as a G3 but thinner at its thinnest point, whole new IBIS system, and an apparent WOW inducing EVF). I'm betting that the EM5 will be no less (coat) pocketable than the EP3.

For me, this seems to be a 4/3 camera with a pellicle semi-transparent mirror (like the Sony SLT) with the viewfinder combining an electronic image with an optical one (like the Fuji X100). This explains the large pentaprism structure. I cannot see the switch to change the viewfinder view, otherwise it explains all. If true, this camera will be revolutionary, and a clean response of Oly to critics of abandonement of pro 4/3 line.

That would be more wise deission from Olympus in my opinion, the PEN line is wide enough without another new m4/3 camera.

But the images tell another story if they are authentic: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1041&message=40510330

But all answers will be told next wensday ;)

Most likely this is the case, however, another option is that the "AP2" logo just marks a connection with the hump/hot shoe/mic package to the body.

Two days until we know.

Not everyone needs f1.7 and stopped down the current 17 is a very nice little lens. Bokeh and flare characteristics are more pleasing than the 20 IMO.
Who are these photographers who don't need f1.7? In low-light at f2.8, the 17 2.8 photographer vs a 20 1.7 shooter, has only the option of increasing the ISO, or using a tripod to make an exposure.

As far as bokeh, 17 has 5 aperture blades, vs 7 aperture blades for the 20 1.7. For this reason, it's virtually impossible for the 17 to have better bokeh. More blades = more circular diaphragm = better bokeh and highlight rendering.

I never said the 17 2.8 was a bad lens. Just that it's in need for either an update, less noisy AF. The MSC AF on the new Oly lenses (like my 45 1.8) is fast and quiet making is excellent for photos and video.

Re: aperture - Micro 43 lenses need to have apertures as large as possible due to the physical characteristics of the sensor size regarding DOF relative to APS-C/FF. f2.8 on m43 is not exactly going to set the world on fire. Did you notice the luke-warm response to the new Sigma 19 2.8 and 30 2.8 lenses? If they had been f1.8 or f2 even, they would sell like hotcakes.

Didn't mean it as knock of 17 2.8, just that I would expect the OM-D to be mated with a lens that a bit more modern and inspiring.

12) overall a very well designed and aesthetically pleasing camera which should please those who owns the OM series before it
I used an OM-2 system for 25 years, IMHO the new camera is a far less pleasing design than the original; let's hope at least the hotshoe can be removed. Hope these are renderings that are not representative of how the real product looks.

Also, I'm afraid some of the existing lenses like the 2/12 and 1.8/45 don't look well on this body either. With the OM system, bodies and lenses the design was more coherent.

but it's the inside that counts ;)

1: It is after all a retro design, the OM had a hump
... but only as an option on the OM-1/2. The OM hotshoe was a bit of a kludge, but at least you could leave it off and have a camera with clean lines, better for the eyebrows too ;(
