Hello all,

I was reading from another forum about this fungus-like residue on the lens of a brand new S45 at the corner.

They said, they sent it back to Canon but the people at Canon said that this is normal for every S45s.

Do you guys have the same issue over there?

Nope. Bought mine in Sweden almost two weeks ago, had no problem with the lens at all... So, did you actually see it (the residue) on the lens, or was it only affecting the images taken?

Anyways, like I said, I have not noticed any problems either looking at the lens nor in the images produced either.

Regards,
Roger

Over here? Where are you?

Can this fungus be easily cleaned off without damaging the lens?

David,

I live in Singapore also. I bought my S45 about 1 month ago and do not have mold, fungi or other residue on the lens.

Guys,

Need your help as you have already owned S45. I am deciding to buy S45 by the end of year. Right now I am just a point-and-shoot kind of user, a few friends and some websites suggested that I should go with S230.

But since I will take a special Canon photography class in my area to learn more about Canon advanced features (Av, Tv, etc), is S45 the right one for me? Also, does USD 610 sound reasonable to spend on this camera? It comes with standard accesories and 32 MB card and 1 year warranty. I live in Indonesia and the market is not competitive at all for digital camera, it is seller's market.

Many thanks in advance for your input. Happy Holidays.

what color is the fungus your're talking about?
i dont suppose you can take pics with mirror...

If you don't mind the bigger size and higher cost of S45 vs. s230, I think it's a great choice. Lots more to learn, more zoom, more megapixels.

Can you get a better deal in Singapore? Australia? I don't know whether you have e-commerce options in Indonesia, or whether the taxes would make it impractical.

Johannes,

Difficult question to answer as it depends on individual needs, expectations and budget. In my case, I wanted a compact DC I could carry in my briefcase on trips throughout Asia and take very good photos. The S45 is my second DC, my other one is a (I’m embarrassed to mention it) 1MP Agfa CL30 I use(d) mostly for web photos, definitely not high quality photos. I’ve spent most of time with consumer type SLRs and recently started with DCs.

There are some great pbase.com galleries that will give you ideas on photo qualities & both reviews and feedback here that will give you the user perspectives.

I don’t have experience with the S230 & only 1 month with the S45, however I am learning this is a great little camera for my needs. The only area I wish was better is the internal flash, but that is a trade-off with a compact DC. If I had to do it again I would still buy the S45.

You mentioned learning the Av & Tv modes, they are useful. Does the S230 have these?
Suggestions:

1. Try to look forward at your needs a year or so from now, do you expect them to change? This may help you decide today.

2. You probably have done this already, but get your hands on both DCs and compare the size, control locations, etc.

I paid about SGD 975 (USD 550) and saw the S45 at Singapore Changai airport for SGD 1067 last week. The street price here is about SGD 1000, so USD 610 is a little high. You will need a larger CF card & camera case so factor those into the total cost. You may not need a spare battery, the standard charger is universal (110-240 V), very small and is easy to pack in a suitcase. I’ve shot about 90 photos, mostly without flash, on a single charge without receiving the low battery warning. The battery capacity will decrease over time but out of the box a single battery is OK for my needs. Good luck.

Making a few assumptions here.

I think you are talking about the 3 elliptical circles
along the outer portion of the lens.

If so, the S40 has these as well - it is part of the lens
construction and does not affect the image at all as it
is outside of the image path.

It is not fungus - this would be a bad thing. This did
occur on older lenses (circa 1940-1960) in hot and
humid climates (something to do with the lens element
glues) but does not occur on new lenses as far
as I'm aware unless it is "really" humid - but then mold
and fungus or mildew will grow on anything if the
temperature and humidity is right.

Hi Doug,

Are you on a holiday here in Singapore? Would it be possible if you could share some of your S45 shots? I'm very muich interested.

And as for the fungus-like issue, they were saying its inside the lens layer itself and cannot be cleaned from the outside.

I live in Singapore & hope I don’t experience the fungus problem with our high humidity. I see from your profile you are in S’pore also. I would be interested in seeing any photos you have when you can get them posted.

I have owned my S45 6 days and I love it! I bought it with 256 Mb and a Lowepro AW-10 case. My next thing to buy is a Pc-card adapter and then an extra battery.

I chose between the same cameras and I got the S45 because I get higher quality on my pics and more features in a quite portable and very solid unit.

If it is any help check out my pics at:

I do not have anything exept some specks and dust on my lens. Definitly no fungus.

Sure thing! I'll be purchasing my S45 via hired purchase (Yes I'm desperate) this coming monday, pics should be up the same day :D
