Hello,

Last year we had some really cute Christmas shots of the children of various contributors here.

I wanted to ask if anyone had some shots this year that they would like to share.

Here are a few of my favorite shots of our 1.5 year old son. Last year all he could do at 6 months was roll on the floor. This year he is running and learning his alphabet( a moving target ):

Derek/Greg,

Very cute. Little people make wonderful (but challenging) subjects. I'll post some of mine as soon as I get the chance.

Eric,

Yeah, I was pretty surprised after reviewing the shot that 1/60 sec shutter speed was able to catch the letter midair.

I was just curious, did you use an external flash for your indoor shots? The close up of your son came out really nice. I am still using my 'Ole Faithfull' G1;-) But the internal flash is basically useless. The 420ex has really helped my indoor photography.

Derek
Hey, Derek, way to catch that letter "T" in mid air! ;-)

Here's a couple from my youngest--

Santa Belly in Training

Christmas Smile

All the shots in my galleries thus far are onboard flash, I just got the 420 a couple of days ago. So, yes, the closeup was with the G2's flash. I dialed down the output and fixed the ever-resulting red-eye with Photoshop and I think the pic turned out nice, he had a natural smile rather than his "camera-smile".

I'm thinking that had I nailed him with the 420, it wouldn't have been as nice of a shot, it would have lit everything up and I kind of like the darkish ambiance of the lighting as it is. However, the Santa Belly shot would have been better with the 420 I think.

Wow,

That is pretty good work considering you used the internal flash. Even with post processing it is one of the best internal flash shots I have seen with the G-Series cameras.

The 420ex can be a little tricky for close ups. I don't have an omnibounce. But even if I did I don't think I would want to fire the flash straight into the subject's eyes/face at close range. It is a pretty powerful unit. So I always bounce with the 420ex unless I am further away (ie- wedding,etc...).

So to get in close I usually back up then zoom in and bounce. Some interesting effects can be obtained by useing the swivel off a side wall. I do find that I have to turn down the flash with flash compensation a couple of stops however. Otherwise it can be too much light.

I don't know how I would have taken your 'style' of close up with the 420ex(maybe turn the flash way down). It does look nice the way the background is dimmed.

I have always wanted to try one of those lumiquest promax bounce systems as someone last year took a beautiful shot of their daughter at Christmas with one. It gives a really nice warm but natural effect for portraits with the 420ex.

Thanks, Derek. I haven't tried side bouncing yet although I've seen some example pictures of it and it seems to be the hot-ticket in certain situations. I'm going to try the omnibounce. I'm thinking with the omnibounce attachment shot straight on and the flash compensation dialed WAY down, close ups should work well. It'll be interesting to try it out.

hi guys,

i have the 420EX along with an omnibounce. if i recall correctly, the instructions that came with my omnibounce said to use it only with the flash tilted at 60°.

the interesting thing about the omnibounce is that people seem to either really love or don't care for it. the current sentiment seems to be very much in favor of it but check out this thread from last year: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1010&message=2245629

btw, congrats eric, on your new 420EX. i also love your shot, 'christmas smile'

Hey 21farms,

I noticed in your old thread you mentioned you were going to order a lumiquest 80/20. I have heard and seem really good results with the bounce system for portraits. It is a little more awkward looking than the omnibounce of course, but the results seem to be worth the inconvenience.

Did you ever try the lumiquest? I am thinking about purchasing it at B&H. They have a pretty good price on it.

I think the reason most like the omnibounce is its size and convenience. Although your large rubber band may also work well. Yet it may but a brown/beige tink to things also;-)

What is your current preference?

hi derek,

i asked for it for my birthday last year but never got it. besides, i've been so happy the white index card/rubber band-thing, i really began to wonder if the lumiquest promax would be $37 better. the thought of applying velcro on my flash makes me a little hesitant too not to mention how unweildy it would be.

Yes,

I guess that is why I waited and am still not sure I want to order it. The results look good. But I try to imagine myself using it at a Christmas party and it seems a little rediculous.

I think I would pull it out of camera bag when I am doing intentional portraits. But it would be hard to use on the go or in a semi-crouded room.
