Take the rumors for what they are worth but it looks like we're gonna get two more lenses from Olympus!

"1) The 75mm f/1.8. It has a metal design. I haven’t seen that lens yet but I guess it has a similar 12-50mm finishing. It’s a perfect portrait lens!

2) The 60mm f/2.8 macro is weather sealed like the E-M5 body and has a close focusing distance of 0.19m."

I have to admit, buy te time her gets to an "FT5" level, it's pretty solid, and they almost couldn't do any better than two lenses like this.

Of course, I would have to have both. I would almost want to buy these to go with my E-P3 before even looking at the new body.

. . . I can't say whether I really need either one of them but that hasn't stopped me from spending my money in the past so maybe the 75/1.8 - LOL

That one, absolutely, would be #1 on the list.

Hmm, a close focusing distance of 0.19m at 60mm doesn't seem to add up to a true macro lens (1:1) looking at a quick online calculator. Might be wrong though.
The Panny 45 macro is 1:1 at 15.24cm, or 6 inches, and I would assume a 60mm lens at life size would be slightly further away. Looks close to me.

If so, I like the thought that might possibly mean the creation of a tube for getting the 60mm to 1:1, and I would use that tube with my 75-300 M. Zuiko, just like I used the EX25 tube with the 70-300 four-thirds model.

If the Panny-Leica 45 macro is 1:1 at 15.24cm, wouldn't that mean the 60mm could achieve 1:1 at a slightly longer, not shorter, distance?

I would love a 75 f1.8, but I wish Panny was introducing one since obviously it won't have OIS.

I suppose I can suffer a 75mm f/1.8. :) It's at the top of my buy list right now. The pending 35-100mm f/2.8 drops to second.

Hmmm, would of made more sense to let Panasonic release the telephotos (75f1.8) and for Olympus to concentrate on wides.

Now, I don't care who, but can someone release a fast AF 17mm f1.4 please?
At this point I'll settle for a sigma. (if small and fast AF)

It will be interesting to see the size diff between the 75mm and 35-100!!

Of course the 35-100 will win for most panasonic users, as it will have OIS.

Panasonic has the, supposedly fast, 35-100 coming, and there's an obvious slant with Panny more in giving added value for video shooters, which the zoom will do.

Olympus is the photographic (still imaging) company, so it does not surpise me at all they would do a fast 75mm prime. The default stabilization setting on my Pen bodies is off, and that won't be changing with an f1.8 prime.

If Panny did a 75mm f2 or faster lens, they'd probably brand it "Leica" and sell it for 1.5x or 2x whatever this 75mm Zuiko is going to cost. I'll take the Zuiko, thank you.

The close-focusing distance of 0.19m is a touch closer than you'd normally expect for a 60mm macro. So I'm guessing it's an IF design as they tend to shorten their focal length quite a bit at the closest focusing distance. If it's an IF lens and compact it will probably have a very good working distance.

That's about 7 1/2", so that's pretty good.
My Nikon 60mm f2.8D macro focuses at 8.6" minimum. It's 1:1.
My Nikon 105mm f2.8 AI-S macro focuses at 1.34 feet minimum. It's 1:2.
As a comparison, the Voigtländer Nokton 25mm focuses at a hair under 7".

Not for me, I'd rather have the fast prime on my G3. If it comes down to it I'll switch to Olympus for IBIS rather pay for the 2.8 zooms. I'm becoming more and more glad I switched to Micro-4/3.

Greg.

A fast prime telephoto and a zoom are two entirely different beasts. One would assume that the 35-100mm zoom will be considerably bigger and more expensive than the 75mm f1.8.

And all that still boils down to the level of image quality of each. I'd expect the 75mm to be sharper, especially if it's based on either the 12mm or 45mm lenses. But. we won't know anything until both are released, we read reviews, see test shot AND they're readily available.

Defining a lens to only be a "true macro" if it gives 1:1 is rather irrelevant in the modern era of multiple format sizes. It is not as if we are making measurement directly off the film any more. (It is almost always silly to make evaluations with simple rigid "yes or no" rules, when the reality is a continuum of performance capabilities.)

It makes much more practical sense to look at "minimum field size": how small an object you can fill the frame with, and so get your full quota of pixels on the subject. That and looking at the working distance that it allows you at maximum magnificaton. Also look at whether it can be used with extension tubes, and how small the minimum field size can get then.

For comparison, the Olympus 50/2 macro for Four Thirds has a minimum field size of about 33.3x25mm (very close to what a 1:1 macro lens gives in 35mm film format) with a minimum focusing distance of 24cm. And with extension tube EX-25, down to about 17.7 x 13.3mm (which is 1:1, but good for subjects small as with a 2:1 macro in 35mm film format.)

Any extension tubes for m43 yet?

Smaller lenses, better in low light, more telephoto reach:
you can have any two at one time.
