I've been looking at Nikon DSLR's for underwater photography and read Nikon is a subsidiary of Mitsubishi, who is involved heavily with overfishing and stockpiling of bluefin tuna.

Should those photographers amongst us who are concerned about ocean conservation dump Nikon till Mitsubishi stop the destroying bluefin tuna?

Any suggestions on a camera brand well supported by underwater housing manufacturers who's parent companies have a better record?

It's not that they don't have enough problems.

If you know anything about Japanese companies you should know most are owned by other Japanese companies. I am sure Mitsubishi owns portions of dozens of Japanese companies, just as Sony, Hitachi, Panasonic does. They are all inbred to some extent. I am not making lite of your original post, it's just Nikon has gone through so much between the naturals disasters in Japan and Thailand, the power plant debacle near one of their main Japanese plants and now a problem with blue fin tuna and Mitsubishi. Just give it a rest. If you must boycott Mitsubishi, research the issue, start a website and explain your point of view.

Adams, Gutmann, Steichen, Snoopy, Stigletz, Weston. they lead by example.

I hunt, I peck, I squint, all on a Dell M1330 13" laptop. So don't laugh, I'm happy there aren't more typo's!

You might as well boycott everything since the megacorps own everything:

Since they use it a lot in sushi and sashimi, why not boycott that. Just ain't going to happen. The dumb asses would rather fish them too extinction first.

boycott every single Japan company, since it's the Japanese, who consume the most tuna (and whale) meat.

I'm with you OP.

But for different reasons, yours mean nothing to me.

What bothers me is the toxic run-off, after the floods, all the chemicals and oils and toxins involved in the camera making business, that Nikon allowed to flow from their factories into the ocean water. Think of all the auto-focus motor parts the fish thought were food, and choked on and died. Not from the D3xxx and D5xxx of course. And probably they were the WORKING motors that were SUPPOSED to go in the D7000's... sheesh.

I think that was incredibly careless, and they should have considered that decades ago.

I'm going to walk over to the pier right now, and toss all my gear into the ocean... and hopefully not hit any fish in the head...

'cuz I don't deal very well with irony.

This is no laughing matter. There is talk Charlie the Tuna is exploring alternate lifestyles as he is unable to find a Misses Tuna.

Conscience is a funny thing. Do what you have to do. Bring it in here at your own peril.
Alright... let's protest... who's with me ?

OK, not so purely a hobby.

That is a FUNNY picture!

No.

Human beings are destroying the planet, there are no "better records", just better PR

Panasonic forum as they are a subsidiary of Matsushita.. (BTW Panasonic also tie up with Leica for electronics and lenses.. posted there too?)

and anything Sanyo... (they do cameras but are not featured on DPR as a camera maker.

I recognise the sentiment. but companies are so diverse now.. you would not buy anything if you knew all of the cost cutting, corner cutting, dodgy deals (look at Olympus in the news as we speak) andcut throat way companies operate.. and the list goes on and on.

Imagine that... cameras and bread makers from the same company!
But they're not "real" cameras, are they?

I can vouch for their bread makers, though, as I make a great toasted tuna sandwich ;-)
