X-S1 Night shots.

of others an me pointing it out is not trolling, you seem to simply redefine the term and call your 'bridge residence' a mansion on a hill.

Till someone walks over your bridge......

Seriously Paul ... compare it to your S100
Pauls pictures look better than what my LX5 could produce. I would suggest having a camera with the range of the XS1 and the image quality of a premium compact is very appealing to a lot of people.

The S100fs is now an ancient, outdated camera and an obsolete concept, the XS1 isn't.
Apart from hearing about the legend that the S100fs is, I never paid much attention to it. But the other day, in Paul's "X-S1 UK Garden birds" thread ( http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1012&message=40440400 ), Ken Threed pointed out this older S100fs post from Paul:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1012&message=38141756

I was pretty impressed with the details of those shots (compared to the the X-S1 shots posted). Possibly due to PP - who knows. But impressive nonetheless for an ancient camera.

Cheers,

Wayne

Don't fret, Danny. I've instructed some friends that often walk across the bridge to occasionally lean over and drop you a few crumbs. Do you like troll house cookies? "Rabbit Proof Fence" is about your neighbors. Does watching or reading it make you nervous and twitchy? :)

Yeah, I noticed you have been getting quite aggressive with my mates "over the ditch".

Seems you have a problem with the whole southern hemisphere......

A real shame.

Don't kill yourself, Paul...

You can suffer for your art if you want, but you don't have to take it for the team!

I predict Paul will return this cam within 7 days...
Hi Paul,

Sorry to say, I must agree with the sentiments expressed above, based on what we've seen thus far. But I do hope you'll persevere a bit longer and perhaps shoot some 12mp RAWs with it at least before giving it up. The ORBs thing is sure another serious shortcoming for nightshooters, but to my eyes the bigger problem is just generally disappointing IQ. The only full-res output I've seen from this camera to-date has been somewhere between disappointing and dismal considering the specs, and if you can't make it sing then I won't expect much better from anyone who'll love it regardless of its faults.

Still, I'd love to be wrong about this... So please keep working with it awhile, and show us whatever it can or can't do.

Good luck,

Kenn

Do they walk like this Bill? Can they still lean over?

You would think the IQ would improve over a "now an ancient, outdated camera and an obsolete concept" but sadly from what I am looking at the XS1 with its new concept and spanky new smell can't match the quality of the S100fs

You stomped Daniel's claim pretty well Ralph.
Nope, afraid not.
Your thourough counter argument aside, I remain unconvinced.
I suspect that the HS30 will crush the X-S1.
:D
Ratty is now rooting for the HS line, good grief....
That just shows how I have no agenda against the HS series of cameras. I call it the way I see it. Unlike your automatic knee jerk reactions that get continually stomped here.
The IQ being shown here simply is not worth the exORBitant price Fuji is charging.
Neither is the X100 but you still bought it.
The X100 is an astounding success, and it is all due to it's IQ. Because you have such a low priority on IQ, you don't see the value in it. No problems with that. Not every one places a high value on sharp images with a lot of contrast. You probably dont value shooting at ISO6400 and having the results be perfectly useable for large prints .

I guess for snapshot shooters, the X100 is overpriced.

I would have paid a lot more for the X100 as is . That is how much I value it.

A more realistic comparison and I think will be used ISO mostly is this...

You clearly haven't seen the studio samples directly comparing the two cameras.

One thing is for certain, don't use the S100fs for low light (or anything you don't want a hideous purple fringe around).

The S100fs had a harsh initial reception here, no?

YOU WOULD THINK, people would change the way they approach these new releases based on THEIR past experience.

The only shame is with your extraordinarily foolish and ignorant assumptions. That film is one that I enjoyed watching and have recommended to others. I haven't read the book but I'd bet that I'd enjoy it as much as the film. Please tell us what the problem is that you imagined . Other than a very small number of people such as you, I've had only positive experiences with people that I've met and worked with from Australia and New Zealand, and the kiwi film industry and many of their actors and actresses are extremely talented. Unlike you who got off to a rocky start in this forum, repeatedly trashing the USA, its people and its customs, I haven't followed your example with regards to NZ. It seems that the only way that you can have a discussion is to try to create a fight by fabricating imagined insults. That's the mark of a troll, and you are nothing if not a troll. You've told us several times how much you enjoy sparring and fighting. Yes, we know, we know, and you didn't have to tell us. What films do you enjoy watching. Fight Club?

Remember you can't PP in detail that never existed...USM is not adding detail and neither is stacking...I think most of Paul's s100fs images were RAW conversions, so probably these were as well...Paul's talent, RAW conversion and the classic s100fs all contributed to those superb images...The ancient s100fs, but still a classic in my mind...

The irony is rich tonight. Not too long ago and for many months, Daniel kept writing over and over how great a camera the HS20 was, repeatedly saying (referring to "bridge cameras") that it was the best in its class. When reminded of the superiority of the S100fs, he readily agreed, but pointed out that he had included one of his infamous "weasel words", pointing out that he had actually said "the HS20 is the best current camera in its class". And now to try to win his imaginary debate, the superior S100fs is suddenly ancient and outdated, an obsolete concept. I guess that an S100fs firmware update that lets it produce orbs will be a good thing, and bring it up to date, wiping away that obsolete concept in the short time it takes to update its firmware.

Paul, your night shots are so beautiful and I was looking forward to viewing these.

What do you think thus far? I'm seeing some funky things that would make me return it (the lights). What a shame. I'm curious to hear your thoughts.

And thank you for braving the cold! :-)

Yes even way back in the dark ages of the birth of the S100fs some of us hoped for a 4/3 sensor... way way back then

No need to get so upset Bill, I don't really think you hate the entire southern hemisphere.

And for the record, I believe you moved this discussion off topic to the shallows where you felt you could more thoroughly savage your victim.

Funny that you like Kiwi actors, they are a bit of a laughing stock here. ;)

I voiced my frustration over PF issues with my s100fs - but these can be generally controlled by the more experienced photographer - or dealt with fairly well in the PP stage.

On the other hand, orbs and now these new orbs 'with flair' happen no matter what and cannot always be remedied amid pp.

Wayne, if you're reading this - thanks for sharing the link to Paul's birding shots. Those were gorgeous. Some of the finest I've seen here - among Kenn and his wife as well as Kevin C. Great stuff.....
