Can the D7000 be found... anywhere?

Been thinking about getting a D7000 as a back-up to my D300s (will the D400 ever come?).

Recognizing that the floods in Thailand wreaked havoc on Nikon's production of the D7000 (and the fine 16-85 as that's also impossible to find), I do see that D7000 bodies are showing up in dribs and drabs occasionally.

Headed to the Everglades in a week and looking for something a little lighter than the D300s, so this would be a good time to pull the trigger on a D7000. But they look to be sold out everyplace (in the U.S.).

Anybody got any insights or tips on how to get a new one in the near term? What's the prognosis for Nikon's Thai manufacturing plants?

Thanks,

Rey

The latest news from Nikon is that they won't be up to full Thai production until late March. At this point your only option is a refurb, a D5100 if you don't need the control, a D90 if you can tolerate last generation's best, or another D300. Rumors are that the D400 is a couple of months off, and the D800 will be announced in about 2 weeks.

You could probably get a refurb D5100 without lense for about $540 from Cameta and then once the D400 or D800 come out, dump the D5100 and upgrade then. You could probably sell it for close to what you paid for it so that way you don't get stuck paying full price for the D7000, haven't seen those as a refurb for a while and the refurb price wasn't that much lower than the new price.

the nikon D7000,d5100 and d3100 are hard to find here in the uk too
most shops and online say they have them untill you try to buy

Nikon D5100/Panasonic FZ48/TZ6/Pentax 430
Hi from England

A few of the D5100 kits at BestBuy.

Absolutaly. I ordered one from Clifton Cameras and their website said it was in stock, I even had the finance approved and then they called to say it wasn't available.

So in the end I went for the D5100 and when I visited Jessops in Oxford (the one in St Ebbews st) there was a D7000 sitting on display! I bought it along with the 18-200VR and a 30/1.8. I think I was very lucky to find it.

...you'll find one. The D7000 is perhaps the most sophisticated and capable DX DSLR ever produced. At its ridiculously low price point it's a real bargain.

It is a bit small if you're used to something like the D2x or D3 but just add the optional battery grip and the size, feel, balance and weight seems perfect. Plus you'll gain a vertical shutter and control wheels,,never a bad thing.

It is the most exciting camera I've owned since my Kodak Brownie back in 1958. It's fast, capable and a real joy to use. I honestly believe Nikon trotted it out to beta test a few features now appearing on the D4. But the D7000 had them first and on a $1200 camera no less!

Buy one if you can find one!!!

I can't find any D7000's in the UK. I have contacted all the large dealers and there don't seem to be any around! Ah well - I will just have to wait I guess - but my fingers are itching to get one.

Yes, plenty to be had in south east asia where I currently reside. The shelves are overflowing with D7000 bodies and kits in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. And refurbs are piling up too. You may want to try a grey import from the far east. Afterall, the D7K is not all that expensive and the risk is relatively small. :)

I have one and LOVE it, too, but I've seen bothersome comments saying the AF is less capable in low light than the FX models. I have no experience with FX to confirm or deny. What say you?

Best,

Jeffrey

The FX models like the D700, D3 and D3S focus better than the D7000 in low light and take better quality pictures at higher iso you get what you pay for. Not to mention they are better sealed etc amongst other things.

That is incorrect. The D7000 was not trotted out to test feautures to incorporate into the D4. The D4 may have gained a feature or 2 from the D7000 but the D4 kept a lot from the D3. Thankgoodness.
